Shocking bystander video captures LAPD SWAT storming high-rise, killing armed suspect who took woman hostage

Video footage taken by a bystander across from a high-rise apartment shows a SWAT team from the Los Angeles Police Department enter and kill a suspect who had taken a hostage after allegedly wounding a 14-year-old in the head.

The shocking footage from the Friday incident shows the suspect, at one point, put a gun to the head of the victim moments before the SWAT team enters the domicile.

According to the department, LAPD officers were in pursuit of a suspect on foot after he allegedly took some shots at people downtown and tried to carjack a woman’s vehicle. Police followed the suspect to an apartment complex and kept him under surveillance via camera.

“The officers established a perimeter and began requesting additional resources including K9 and SWAT,” said the department in a late Friday tweet. “While a tactical plan was being put in place, officers became aware of surveillance footage from inside the apartment complex.

“They saw the suspect in a hallway armed with a gun forcing a female to come with him. At that point, we knew we had a hostage situation. While LAPD personnel were outside of the complex they saw through a window, the suspect holding a gun to the hostages [sic] head,” the department added.

“Based on the already incredibly violent actions & fearing the suspect was going to kill the hostage, SWAT entered the apartment. An OIS occurred and the suspect was struck by gunfire and has died at scene. The hostage has been taken to a local hospital. The firearm is at scene,” the LAPD added.

One witness recorded the incident from a vantage point across the street and then posted the video to Twitter. The suspect is seen grabbing the hostage, putting the gun to the hostage’s head, and then moving around the apartment before LAPD officers move in and fire a number of shots.

“He’s got a gun to someone’s head,” a bystander is heard saying in the video.

Warning: Graphic

Police originally responded to reports that an armed man who was suspected of committing several crimes in the area, including sticking a gun in a man’s face although the weapon did not go off, and shooting at a 14-year-old who was inside a business.

The shot grazed the teen’s head, who was then transported to a hospital with a wound that was not considered to be life-threatening.

“Inside that business, the suspect pointed the gun at the group. The group ducked and the suspect fired at them,” LAPD Detective Meghan Aguilar said, according to KTLA. “One of those rounds grazed the 14-year-old on the side of the head. He’s been taken to a local hospital, where he is expected to survive.”

Afterward, the suspect confronted and struggled with a bicyclist who saw the suspect reach into his waistband, while security officers who witnessed it directed LAPD officers to the shooter. At that point, LAPD officers chased the suspect into the apartment building where he took the hostage.
