Ethics complaint filed against AOC over attending Met Gala with boyfriend

An ethics complaint has been filed against U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., over her appearance at Monday’s $35,000-per-ticket Met Gala.

AOC attended the party with her boyfriend Riley Roberts and had the internet abuzz over her attire. Not bothering with a mask, the champagne socialist strutted around showing off the backside of her dress, which was emblazoned with the message: “Tax the Rich.”

But the overriding question for many is who paid for her ticket? According to reports, Ocasio-Cortez said she was personally invited by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. However, the Daily Mail reported that the lawmaker was not given comp tickets by Conde Nast, which owns Vogue.

Turns out, the congresswoman wasn’t the only New York City socialist at the event, as Mayor Bill de Blasio was also there with his wife Chirlane McCray and son Dante, with the source of their tickets also uncertain. Media Entertainment Arts World Wide cited Met Museum spokesperson Nancy Chilton to report “the Democrat leaders attended the event as guests of the museum.”

The American Accountability Foundation filed an ethics complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics requesting an investigation.

Founder Thomas Jones said in the complaint that he believes Ocasio-Cortez broke House rules by accepting “an impermissible gift” of free tickets to attend the annual gala, the New York Post reported.

Ocasio-Cortez also had on multiple pieces of fine jewelry from Mejuri Monday night, including 14 karat gold hoop earrings valued at $450, according to the New York Post.

Mejuri said in a press release on Monday night, “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wore multiple pieces from the leading fine jewelry brand Mejuri to the 2021 Met Gala: In America: A Lexicon Of Fashion. Alexandria wears the Large Tube Hoops and Dome Ring.“

Responding to all the hoopla, Ocasio-Cortez assured all that she was hard at work at the swanky gala meeting her responsibilities as an elected official. Oh, and the dress she was wearing that was rumored to cost $10,000 was “borrowed.”

She wrote on Instagram: “And yes, BEFORE anybody starts wilding out – NYC elected officials are regularly invited to and attend the Met due to our responsibilities in overseeing our city’s cultural institutions that serve the public. I was one of several in attendance. Dress is borrowed…”

In addition to Ocasio-Cortez and de Blasio attending, fellow New York Democratic U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney was on hand.

A representative for de Blasio told Politico that the mayor was also doing his duty on behalf of the city.

“The mayor made the decision to attend months ago in one of his hours long economic recovery war room meetings led by Lorraine Grillo,” spokesperson Bill Neidhardt said. “He wanted to highlight a local designer who had been able to make it through the pandemic. It’s a notable way to grab people’s attention and highlight the return of the city’s fashion industry jobs.”

As for AOC’s timing, Democrats just rolled out “the highest tax increases in American history,” designed to help pay for President Biden’s $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation package.

Newsmax TV’s Greg Kelly took a shot at the lawmaker’s “virtue signaling and social media sensationalism,” and her understanding of taxes, reminding viewers that she led the opposition to Amazon opening a headquarters in her district.

“Of course she was there,” Kelly said of the Met Gala on his show Tuesday. “With a silly dress that says, ‘Tax the Rich.’ I know everybody’s already made the point that this thing could not have happened without rich people.”

As for pushing Amazon out, Kelly said, “She was so stupid that she thought, actually, she had done a good job on that.”

The important thing in the eyes of Ocasio-Cortez’s adoring fanbase — which includes the media — according to the Newsmax TV host, is that she’s “hot.”

“This is back when she really didn’t know anything about tax incentives actually, had no idea what they were, got them wrong publicly when she was asked to describe basics of the economy. She did not know. She still does not know,” Kelly said. “But it’s ok because she’s AOC, right? She’s got 10 million followers on Instagram. She’s everywhere. She was on the cover of TIME magazine. She went to the ball. She’s hot. She’s it. She’s young. She’s pretty. She’s Hispanic. That’s all that matters anymore.”

“I think she might run for president, probably pretty soon,” he concluded.
