Ohio congressional candidate Mike Carey overwhelmingly won the Republican primary for a vacant House seat on Tuesday after being endorsed by former President Trump, further highlighting his ever-growing influence within the party.
Carey handily defeated ten other Republican candidates securing the nomination for the November 2 special general election to replace Rep. Steve Stivers. He beat Ohio State Rep. Jeff LaRe by 24 points. Because of the crowded field, Carey won with only 37 percent of the vote. LaRe took second place with 13.3 percent.
Carey said his win was evidence of Trump’s force within the GOP. He ran on Trump’s “America First” policies and the former president’s endorsement nailed the win for him. He was a virtual unknown before Trump’s backing.
“Tonight, Republicans across Ohio’s 15th Congressional District sent a clear message to the nation that President Donald J. Trump is, without a doubt, the leader of our party. I could not be more grateful for his support, and I am proud to deliver this win to advance his America First agenda,” Carey said in a statement.
“Great Republican win for Mike Carey,” Trump wrote in a statement that was released Tuesday night. “Big numbers! Thank you to Ohio and all of our wonderful American patriots. Congratulations to Mike and his family. He will never let you down!”

Trump sang Carey’s praises on July 15 in a statement, “Mike Carey, a true champion, is doing really well against the gang of RINOs in Ohio’s 15th Congressional District. Mike loves our Country, is smart, strong, tough on Crime and Borders, adores our Military and our Vets, and will totally protect our Second Amendment. I have known Mike for many years and he will not let you down! Mike Carey has my Complete and Total Endorsement. Get out and VOTE on August 3, 2021!”
On July 27th, the former president sent out another ringing endorsement, “Numerous candidates in the Great State of Ohio, running in Congressional District 15, are saying that I am supporting them, when in actuality, I don’t know them, and don’t even know who they are. But I do know who Mike Carey is—I know a lot about him, and it is all good. Mike Carey is the only one who has my Endorsement and he’s the one I feel will do the best job for Ohio, and for the United States. Please vote for Mike Carey next Tuesday, and let there be no further doubt who I have Endorsed!”
Trump’s political groups launched a $350,000 ad buy late last week for targeted text messages, digital, and TV ads backing Carey.

Carey’s Republican primary win in Ohio is “very good news for Trump,” noted Henry Olsen, who is an elections analyst and senior fellow with the Washington-based Ethics and Public Policy Center. “He doesn’t run the party, but he’s re-established himself as its single most influential figure.”
Carey is a former coal lobbyist and is a strong Second Amendment advocate. He will face state Rep. Allison Russo (D) in the general election and is reportedly favored to win the seat in November by a wide margin.
There was a celebration on social media:
Trump endorsement carries hella weight. Media wet their pants excited because of Texas endorsement loss. Carey will put America first! Thank you sir
