TX Gov. Greg Abbott signs executive order restricting transportation of illegal immigrants

Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed an executive order on Wednesday that restricts border entries and the transportation of illegal immigrants due to concerns over the transmission of COVID-19 in his state.

The governor’s move follows a promise he made recently to build a border wall in Texas. The order focuses on “restricting ground transportation of migrants who pose a risk of carrying COVID-19 into Texas communities.” It directs the state’s Department of Public Safety to stop and reroute “any vehicle upon reasonable suspicion of such violation.”

“The dramatic rise in unlawful border crossings has also led to a dramatic rise in COVID-19 cases among unlawful migrants who have made their way into our state, and we must do more to protect Texans from this virus and reduce the burden on our communities,” Abbott noted in a statement. “This Executive Order will reduce the risk of COVID-19 exposure in our communities.”

While talking with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Abbot detailed his reasoning for the executive order.

“What happened yesterday in La Jolla, Texas, where it was learned that migrants had been released by Border Patrol that were in La Jolla, found at a Whataburger with extreme signs of illness. And they themselves said they had COVID-19. And it was learned that there was a hotel full of people with COVID-19 and that’s exactly why I issued this executive order that does a couple of things,” Abbott explained.

“One, it empowers the Texas Department of Public Safety to stop any vehicle where there is a suspicion that that vehicle may be transporting into and around the state of Texas anyone who may have COVID-19. And second, it orders the Department of Public Safety to return that vehicle to either the point of origin, which would be where the Border Patrol officers let them go, or to the Port of Entry,” Abbott stated.

“I have a job to protect the safety and health of the people of the state of Texas and that includes, especially now, preventing President Biden from importing COVID-19 into Texas as well as into the United States,” the governor asserted.

Hannity then asked Abbott about the government considering mandating vaccines for all Americans and the CDC stating that some vaccinated individuals have to wear masks inside buildings and at gatherings while simultaneously allowing hordes of untested, unvaccinated, and potentially infected illegal immigrants to swarm into the country.

The Texan leader responded, “Obviously, it’s hypocritical.”

“But obviously, it shows that the Biden administration cares more about people who are not residents of America than it does about the residents of America. Because he has one standard trying to mask up and vaccinate our fellow Americans, allowing free pass into the United States of people with a high probability of COVID and then spreading that COVID up in our communities as has been shown in the Rio Grande Valley,” he added. “What the Biden administration is doing is deadly, is dangerous, and must be stopped. And that’s what my executive order that I issued today tries to achieve.”

The governor contends that the Biden administration’s refusal to deport illegal immigrants who could be infected and his failure to enforce the country’s immigration laws could have a “potentially catastrophic effect” on public health efforts in Texas as well as across the nation.

Abbott has also ordered the National Guard to help local law enforcement arrest illegal immigrants. He sent a letter to Maj. Gen. Tracy R. Norris of the Texas Military Department requesting more “manpower” to mitigate border crossings according to The Texas Tribune.

“To respond to this disaster and secure the rule of law at our Southern border, more manpower is needed — in addition to the troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and soldiers from the Texas National Guard I have already deployed there — and DPS needs help in arresting those who are violating state law,” the letter declared. “I hereby order that the Texas National Guard assist DPS in enforcing Texas law by arresting lawbreakers at the border.”
