Don Lemon backs Fauci in ‘gain of function’ slugfest, says Rand Paul looks ‘like an idiot’ … for winning

CNN’s Don Lemon attacked Senator Rand Paul on his show Tuesday night asking what was wrong with him and telling him point-blank to just “stop it” after Paul wiped the Senate floor with Fauci over gain-of-function research funding.

Lemon started out by accusing Paul of making Fauci his “personal punching bag.” This was in reference to the two going at it over whether the U.S. National Institutes of Health had funded a grant for gain-of-function research at China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology.

During the clash, both Paul and Fauci accused each other of lying. Senator Paul began his questioning by asking, “This research matches — indeed it epitomizes — the definition of gain-of-function research done entirely in Wuhan, for which there was supposed to be a federal pause. Dr. Fauci, knowing that it is a crime to lie to Congress, do you wish to retract your statement of May 11 where you claimed that the NIH never funded gain-of-function research in Wuhan?”

That set the CNN host off, who took great offense at Paul’s line of questioning and hotly defended Fauci, “[T]he misinformation keeps spreading, even — or especially on Capitol Hill. That’s where the Delta variant has been detected, prompting the Capitol doctor to urge members to get vaccinated and to consider masking up. That as one of the chief vaccine deniers, Sen. Rand Paul, well he tried to make Dr. Anthony Fauci into his personal punching bag today as they went head to head over the senator’s bogus claims that the National Institutes of Health somehow played a role in funding research that led to the origins of the pandemic and Dr. Fauci was definitely not having it.”

Lemon enthusiastically then turned to a montage that he had selectively put together that showed the most explosive moments during the face-off. The display favored Dr. Fauci and vilified Senator Paul. The CNN host then proceeded to launch into a vicious attack against the senator.

“What is wrong with Rand Paul? Seriously. I know that’s what you at home are thinking because I’m thinking the same thing. What’s wrong with him? What is he trying to prove? There’s nothing to prove there, and he keeps embarrassing himself. Rand Paul, stop it. You look like an idiot. The lying, the misinformation. It’s why we can’t bridge the political gap even though our lives are at stake, and you still have people who are acting like Rand Paul,” Lemon caustically stated.

Fauci has denied over and over again that any funding from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases went to the Wuhan lab for gain-of-function research. But some of the funding did involve research at the lab studying bats from Chinese caves to determine whether they were capable of infecting humans. The lead researcher at the Wuhan lab was known to conduct gain-of-function research. That process can make a disease more transmissible and therefore much more deadly.

Paul told Sean Hannity on his show Tuesday evening that he will write to the Department of Justice asking for a criminal referral because Fauci allegedly lied to Congress under oath.

Conservatives on Twitter don’t think very highly of either Don Lemon or Dr. Fauci:
