Don Lemon took Tucker Carlson to task during a segment on his Tuesday show after the Fox News rival mocked the neighborhood where the CNN host lives.
“I just want to fill you in on something that is going on at the Fox propaganda network,” Lemon said amid a segment discussing the voting reform bill Republicans killed earlier in the day.
“I don’t usually respond to these things. I don’t like to punch down, and I’d rather focus on issues on this show that are important to you, other than someone taking potshots at me,” Lemon continued, before playing a clip of Carlson’s show earlier in the week.
“No, he does not live in Section 8 housing. He lives in one of the Whitest towns in America. In fact, 80 percent” white, Carlson noted in the clip.
“Section 8 housing,” Lemon repeated, obviously disgusted. “Let me simply just say this. If you think that a Black person who doesn’t live in public housing can’t experience or understand racism in this country, well, that just says much more about you and your ignorance on these issues than it does about me.”
In a Monday segment, Carlson dragged Lemon — whose last name he mockingly pronounced as Leh-MON — for what he described as continually portraying himself as a victim though he’s obviously been very successful in his media career.
“Mr. Don Lemon is a cable news host on our competitor over at CNN, and most of the time he talks about cable news host type things: what the Royals are up to, how a commercial airliner might have flown into a black hole, you know, the news,” Tucker said (Lemon suggested in March 2014 that Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, the wreckage of which was never found, could have disappeared into a “black hole” or some sort of other phenomena like the lore surrounding the Bermuda Triangle).
“But Don Lemon most importantly is more than that. Don Lemon’s a civil rights leader. Just the other day he spoke to The Washington Post about his feelings on civil rights, and he declared, you may not be surprised by this, that America is a racist country,” Tucker continued.
In his interview, Lemon said, among other things, “We’re living in two different realities as black and white people.”
Carlson then noted that Lemon is not living a tough life as a black man in an America that is supposedly dominated by white supremacist institutions.
“Don Lemon lives in a $4.3 million home in Sag Harbor, New York. No, he doesn’t live in Section 8 housing, he lives in one of the whitest towns in America,” Carlson said.
“In fact, 80 percent, Sag Harbor is just 3 percent. African-American,” Carlson continued.
“In the interview, Mr. Lemon said America needs to see more people like him. He regularly lectures America about diversity. When he didn’t tell ‘The Washington Post’ is that in his free time he runs away from diversity. His reality is that he doesn’t like diversity at all. None of them do,” the Fox News host continued.
He then quipped: “You’ve heard from the White House and the President himself that white supremacy is a lurking threat and you might not see it but it’s always there like Russian spies, white supremacists come in the dark of night, in the most surprising form, they’re shapeshifters.”
