Congressman ripped for asking FBI director the name of officer ‘lying in wait’ who ‘executed’ Ashli Babbitt

On Tuesday during a House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing concerning the January 6 Capitol riot, Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) questioned FBI Director Christopher Wray over the Capitol police officer who fatally shot protester Ashli Babbitt. House Republicans Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney immediately attacked Gosar for his characterization of the shooting.

“Director Wray, do you know who executed Ashli Babbitt?” asked the congressman. Wray replied to Gosar after a lengthy pause: “No, I don’t know the name of the person who was involved in the Ashli Babbitt shooting.”

“So do you agree that Ashli Babbitt was unarmed?” Gosar then asked the director.

“No, I really can’t weigh in on the facts and circumstances of that case. As you may know, that was investigated by the D.C. Metro’s internal affairs department with the DOJ Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. And the FBI was not the investigative agency,” Wray stated.

“It’s disturbing,” declared Gosar. “The Capitol police officer that did this shooting appeared to be hiding, lying in wait, and then gave no warning before killing her.” He went on to posit once again that Babbitt was “executed” by the unnamed police officer.

Kinzinger (D-IL) and Cheney (R-WY) pounced on Gosar’s wording and accusation Tuesday night.

Kinzinger called Gosar’s statements “sick” in a tweet that he sent out following the hearing: “You’re sick Paul, sadly. Truth is, Ashli was manipulated by people like you and breached an area and put lives in danger despite being repeatedly warned not to. The real criminals are the liars abusing people for political power.”

Cheney dogpiled on Gosar via Twitter as well, calling his comments “disgusting and despicable.”

“On January 6, as the violent mob advanced on the House chamber, I was standing near @RepGosar and helped him open his gas mask. The Capitol Police led us to safety. It is disgusting and despicable to see Gosar lie about that day and smear the men and women who defended us,” she tweeted.

Babbitt breached the Capitol building that day and as she entered the property through a smashed window/door, she was shot by a Capitol police officer out of view. She was unarmed and there were reportedly already others in the building when the shooting occurred. There are multiple videos of the shooting that took place that day. The officer has not been named and the Department of Justice has dropped all charges against him in the fatal shooting. Babbitt’s family is suing for answers but none have been forthcoming.

Rep. Gosar has been a staunch defender of Babbitt since her death and has constantly demanded answers from the authorities over her shooting. He has been stonewalled at every turn regarding the 35-year-old Air Force veteran’s death.

At the end of Gosar’s allotted time for questioning during the hearing, he asked that a “report” on the “January 6th protest” from the conservative website “Revolver News” be entered into the congressional record without objection. It was so ordered as he requested.

Republican Rep. Mo Brooks along with Gosar stated on Tuesday that the House Committee on Ethics had dropped the Democrats’ claims against them concerning the January 6 riot a day after Rep. Lauren Boebert also announced that she too had been cleared. “Squad” member Rep. Pramila Jayapal had led the movement on the left to charge the Republicans for their alleged involvement during the breach.
