Americans with flags on vehicles now a ‘different breed of white people, a**holes, cowards’ and more

Michael Harriot, who is a senior writer for The Root, seems to be insinuating that Americans who drive pickup trucks and proudly display the flag are somehow racist for doing so.

He tweeted on Tuesday his support for Mara Gay who recently went on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and claimed she was triggered by all the American flags on Long Island over Memorial Day weekend. Harriot tweeted: “There’s nothing wrong with the American flag but Mara Gay was right.”

Harriot emphatically made a statement that many consider blatantly racist in the second part of his tweet: “Anyone who flies an American Flag on a pickup truck is a whole different breed of white people.” He seems to have missed the fact that not all drivers of pickup trucks are white.

He crafted the tweet following Gay’s assertion that anyone who flies the American flag is sending a racist message. And then tied the aforementioned alleged racism to former President Trump for good measure.

Harriot’s remarks reflect those of Gay’s.

“The reality is here that we have a large percentage of the American population — I don’t know how big it is, but we have tens of millions of Trump voters who continue to believe that their rights as citizens are under threat by simple virtue of having to share the democracy with others,” Gay told host Mika Brzezinski while calling for an investigation into the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

“I think that as long as they see Americanness as the same as one with Whiteness, this is going to continue,” Gay posited, stating that “Americanness” and “Whiteness” need to be separated.

“I was on Long Island this weekend visiting a really dear friend, and I was really disturbed. I saw, you know, dozens and dozens of pickup trucks with explicatives [sic] against Joe Biden on the back of them, Trump flags, and in some cases just dozens of American flags, which is also just disturbing … Essentially the message was clear. This is my country. This is not your country. I own this,” Gay declared.

She asserted that Americans would never change until the country was ready to candidly have a conversation about “Whiteness,” and then proclaimed that “a large percentage of Americans” don’t understand the threat it poses.

“That is the real concern. Because, you know, the Trump voters who are not going to get onboard with democracy, they’re a minority. You can marginalize them, long-term. But if we don’t take the threat seriously, then I think we’re all in really bad shape,” she claimed.

After Gay was widely attacked for her comments that received virtually no pushback by MSNBC, The New York Times quickly came to her defense and released the following statement via Twitter: “New York Times editorial board member Mara Gay’s comments on MSNBC have been irresponsibly taken out of context. Her argument was that Trump and many of his supporters have politicized the American flag. The attacks on her today are ill-informed and grounded in bad-faith.”

Writer, lesbian, and veteran Charlotte Clymer also supported the views of Harriot and Gay concerning American flags and racism. She tweeted: “As a military veteran, I completely agree with Mara Gay. It is disturbing. Large American flags on trucks are performative nonsense that are absolutely intended to communicate that America is a conservative, white country. It’s an intentional signal. She’s right.”

Clymer didn’t stop there. She slammed her viewpoint home in a follow-up tweet: “I’ll speak for myself here: I’ve folded countless American flags for the loved ones of fallen service members, and when I see this, all I can think is: “Yeah, that person is definitely an a**hole and most likely a coward.”

And when she was called out for the trashing of the ultimate American symbol, she lashed out: “No, it’s very simple: people who feel the need to hoist giant ass American flags on their car by default are deeply insecure and probably racist. We’re all adults here. Let’s cut the sh*t and be honest about this.”

It was a race on Twitter to proclaim who was more racist… Gay, The New York Times, or Harriot:
