Projected DeSantis challenger Nikki Fried declares ‘Fla isn’t a red state,’ amusingly fact-checked by self

Democratic Florida Commissioner of Agriculture & Consumer Services Nikki Fried declared on Twitter Wednesday that “Florida isn’t a red state” even though her bio on the platform seems to indicate otherwise as it states that she is the ONLY statewide elected Democrat.

She was mocked on the social media platform for making a statement that is, at this point in time, factually not true. The tweet comes as Fried gears up to run against wildly popular Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2022.

Fried is the only Democrat to win a statewide election in Florida since 2012. But currently, she is not even holding the lead in her own party for the nomination for governor. U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist is favored in a new St. Pete Polls survey with 55 percent of Democrats supporting him versus 22 percent supporting Fried.

The commissioner should have a lead over Crist considering that her name is plastered on every gas station and concealed-carry permit in Florida and because she is regularly on MSNBC. Crist lost his last two statewide bids for office but is still widely favored over Fried.

As she made her statement on the political color of Florida, a number of Twitter users called her out for her outrageous claim and the fact that her Twitter bio laughingly doesn’t even support it.

Ragged Trousered Philanthropists pointed out the blunt truth of the matter: “So why is there a GOP governor and a plethora of Trump flags in this State?”

Others alluded to her statement as being pretty much a non-fact:

It seems unlikely that Gov. DeSantis will have anything to worry about from Fried or any other Democratic opponent in the upcoming gubernatorial race, but Fried has not done herself any favors in the run-up to the contest.

In 2020, Rebekah Jones, who has claimed to be a doctor but is reportedly not one, allegedly put forth falsehoods concerning Florida’s COVID numbers. Fried supported Jones after she was fired for her statements, claiming that the Florida Department of Health had “censored data and fired Dr. Rebekah Jones.” She asserted that Jones had been “fired by DOH for refusing to manipulate #COVID19 data.” Fried also contended that the police had inappropriately searched Jones’ house.

The commissioner also supported the “60 Minutes” smear against DeSantis over the grocery chain Publix in the state’s vaccination rollout because he had allegedly received donations from them for his reelection campaign. Fried immediately attacked DeSantis: “Tonight @60Minutes is exposing the nation to @GovRonDeSantis’ failings & corruption during the pandemic.”

Since then, Fried has made outrageous statements over the past month including “Florida isn’t a free state,” “Our Constitution is repeatedly battered by Republicans in the legislature & by Governor Ron DeSantis,” and “Liberty in the Sunshine State is under assault.” She also listed the recent bills that DeSantis signed, proclaiming that “I’m not describing the leader of a communist country, I’m talking about Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.” She also refused to lower flags after the death of conservative legend Rush Limbaugh.

Republicans are reporting the fact that Fried’s net worth skyrocketed between 2018 and 2019. It reportedly went from $271,613 to $1,401,563 mainly due to her boyfriend purchasing her a house. He is a marijuana investor and the former CEO of one of the largest marijuana companies in Florida.

During that time, she created a new Cannabis Office and Medical Marijuana Advisory Committee in the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs. At a recent press conference, Fried said she would consider vetoing all Florida bills, including the budget, unless marijuana was legalized in the state.

“Former marijuana lobbyist (Nikki Fried) is mad that the Florida Supreme Court rejected a challenge to the states medical marijuana law? Shocking,” tweeted Lt. Gov. Jeanette M. Núñez on Friday.

The Republican Party of Florida went even further, stating that Fried “is a hypocrite.”

“As a pot lobbyist, she pushed for this legislation and as Agriculture Commissioner her fiancé and family profit from it,” they proclaimed.
