Don’t get too comfy without masks, Fauci says guidance from CDC for businesses is coming soon

Dr. Anthony Fauci on Sunday attempted to clarify the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s announcement last week that fully vaccinated people no longer have to mask up outdoors or indoors, saying that “significant clarification” in terms of how businesses and other venues should operate is forthcoming.

Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the lead medical adviser on COVID for the Biden administration, also acknowledged during an interview with CBS’ “Face The Nation” that the new guidance, issued last week by CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky, was confusing to some Americans.

In pointing out an “accumulation of data showing in the real-world effectiveness of the vaccines,” Fauci went on to note that research also shows them protecting people much better in public than during clinical trials, and from multiple COVID-19 variants.

He also repeated that “the more people you get vaccinated, the safer the entire community is,” while saying he hoped that relaxing the guidelines — which many on the left are opposing — will also convince more Americans to get a vaccine.

“This kind of caught some people by surprise,” host John Dickerson responded. “And because people have been so confused over the course of the last 14 months, would it have been better to prepare the way a little bit more for this? Good news, of course, for everyone. But because there’s been so much confusion over time, would it have been better to kind of walk people up to this very kind of head-snapping new news?”

“People will say that, there may be some merit to that, but as a matter of fact, the CDC did this and took this action based on the data,” Fauci replied.

“What they’ll be doing now is coming out very quickly with individual types of guidances,” he explained further. “So people will say, ‘Well, what about the workplace? What about this? What about that?’

“And I think that’s going to be clarified, John, pretty quickly,” Fauci — who himself has been frequently criticized for providing conflicting information regarding the virus, mask usage, and vaccines — added. “I would imagine within a period of just a couple of weeks, you’re going to start to see significant clarification of some of the actually understandable and reasonable questions that people are asking.”

The reactions to the CDC’s mask guidance reversal, as well as to Fauci’s interview, were mixed online.

“I know a lot of ppl still want to wear the mask. Remember, masks were never supposed to be political. And if a business wants me to wear one, no problemo I will happily wear one. Dr Fauci is the voice of reason. He said its time to start unmasking the fully vaccinated. I listen 2,” wrote one user.

Warning: Strong language

However, another noted, “The pain of seeing the ‘Thanks CDC’ trending You listened when they told you to wear a mask And now you’re not listening to them when they’re saying not to wear a mask This is some top-level unintentional reverse psychology holy sh** you’re all idiots.”

Another user added: “Looks like the a** reaming Dr Fauci took by Rand Paul the other day and the heat on him over his constant flip flopping has suddenly hit home.”

Many states, businesses, and venues have reversed previous requirements for people to mask up. Thirteen states have lifted their mandates, while Disney, SeaWorld Entertainment, and Universal Studios have as well.
