Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) brutally ignored Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) while she attempted to berate him during a Senate hearing for contesting the 2020 election results. Instead, Cruz scrolled his phone and tweeted about Diet Dr. Pepper.
At a Senate Rules Committee hearing Tuesday, Cruz railed against S. 1, the For the People Act, which is co-sponsored by Klobuchar who chairs the committee. Klobuchar went on the attack after the on-point argument by the senator.
“Then let’s fast forward to the day of the insurrection, January 6th, when in fact you, Senator Cruz — not all of your colleagues here today, you — were contesting the electoral college. You were leading, one of the leaders, on the effort to say that the election results were not correct,” Klobuchar proclaimed Tuesday during a hearing on the 2020 election and the Capitol riot while staging dramatic accusations against the Texas senator.
“And so you wonder why we want to make sure that people have the right to vote, well it’s because of this kind of rhetoric and this kind of behavior and an insurrection of the Capitol and a former president that is still maintaining that he somehow won the election when we all know it was not true. And so that’s why when you ask why we are still interested in protecting our democracy from that day of January 6th on, I think that’s your answer,” she harped.

Cruz was nonplussed and unimpressed as he made it clear he preferred to text and swipe his phone during Klobuchar’s tongue lashing rather than listen to her lecture. He didn’t even deign to look at her.
Media outlet The Recount posted a video showing Cruz drinking a can of Diet Dr. Pepper during the altercation and captioned it: “Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) appears to be a Diet Dr. Pepper guy.”
Later, allegedly during the scolding by Klobuchar, Cruz tweeted “Yep.”

The Recount noted on Twitter: “Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) was tweeting at us while ignoring Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN).”
Then Cruz tweeted about Klobuchar’s bloviating statement: “She’s still reading her statement…”
Cruz has previously referred to the voting rights bill as a “fraud law” and claimed that Democrats intend to pass it to “manipulate and steal” future elections. During Tuesday’s hearing, Cruz labeled the voting bill “Jim Crow 2.0”, comparing it to post-Civil War laws that prevented black people from voting.
“We came out of this last election where we saw multiple allegations of serious voter fraud, and the Democrats and the media took on the talking points that voter fraud doesn’t exist. That anyone who says it exists is somehow engaged in a conspiracy theory,” Cruz remarked. “Now with [their bill], the Democrats are seeking to lock in their advantage. They want mail-in ballots everywhere, they want no photo ID.”
Cruz claims the For the People Act “is profoundly dangerous.”

The evenly split committee deadlocked 9-9 on the bill, preventing it from moving to the Senate floor. Despite that, Klobuchar vowed that Senate Democrats had an alternate way to introduce the bill in the Senate.
