As Governor Kemp signed a sweeping voting rights bill into law on Thursday in Georgia, Stacey Abrams melted down and went on a Twitter rant charging that it “suppresses voters, criminalizes compassion and seizes election authority from local and state officials.”
Senate Bill 202 was passed along party lines in the Georgia General Assembly by 100-75 and then by 34-20 in the Senate. Governor Kemp signed the bill about an hour later causing an uproar among Democrats. The bill will implement strict new voter ID requirements, limit absentee ballots and early voting, and put restrictions on ballot drop boxes. The state will also be allowed to take control of county election boards.
The bill is meant to ensure the integrity of elections in Georgia, especially after the contested 2024 presidential race. It also aims to protect against rampant voter fraud in the state.
When The Guardian asked Abrams if the bill and the efforts by Republicans to safeguard Georgia’s elections are connected to race, she replied: “Well, I would say it’s inexorably linked to race, but I want to be really clear. Black voters are of course at the center of the target, but what is happening in Arizona, what is happening in Florida is also attacking Latino voters. They are attacking the energy and enthusiasm of Native American voters. They are attacking Asian American voters. While Black voters are of course at the center because of the historical animus that seems to exist towards our participation in elections, this is also about attacking other communities of color. And we are seeing it being done with an assiduousness and an attention to detail that is, as we said before, unparalleled, except for when you look at the actions of Jim Crow.”

Abrams, who is the founder of Fair Fight Action and a former Democratic gubernatorial nominee, claimed Republicans were intent on “reviving Georgia’s dark past of racist voting laws.”
“Now, more than ever, Americans must demand federal action to protect voting rights,” she declared in a statement.
In her first tweet, Abrams vented her accusations against Republicans: “#SB202 suppresses voters, criminalizes compassion & seizes election authority from local + state officials. In 11 years, I never witnessed a massive bill approved at such speed and signed in such desperation. This wasn’t efficiency or principle. This is cowardice.”

Abrams is expressing anger over people needing ID to vote. Just about everyone has an ID… you have to have one to drive, buy things, travel, etc. Those who don’t have ID tend to be illegal aliens or have other alleged issues that need to be dealt with. IDs are inexpensive and in many cases free. She’s also raging over it being forbidden to supply water and food to voters in line, a practice that most Americans have never seen, needed, or wanted. The ‘criminalizing compassion’ slant is a new leftist talking point to tug at heartstrings but it has virtually no relevance in the voting process.
She added: “Georgia Republicans want to hide their shameful actions from public scrutiny. It’s Jim Crow in a suit + tie: cutting off access, adding restrictions, encouraging more “show me your papers” actions to challenge a citizen’s right to vote. Facially neutral but racially targeted.”

The bill that was just signed demonstrably has nothing to do with race. It has to do with protecting the voting process in Georgia. Abrams is reportedly using the accusation to whip up anger against Republicans because the bill will actually stop a great deal of the shenanigans concerning voter fraud that the state has been incessantly plagued with.
Then she continued with: “GOP legislators gave themselves the right to takeover local elections & throw out results – what they tried and failed to do in MI. They raised costs for taxpayers and forbid counties from accepting funds to cover the bill. They criminalize free water & food for those in line.”

Abrams concluded with a final tweet: “Republicans passed & signed #SB202 to signal their capitulation to lies over truth. To fear over fairness. To suppression over participation. But we will not be defeated by their worst actions & instincts. We will spread the word, we will sue & we will win. For democracy.”

Abrams’ name-calling and desperation on Twitter indicate that her premise that voting is being restricted and suppressed is untrue. The only results ostensibly thrown out are votes that cannot be verified or that are fraudulent. There has been no valid evidence that proves her assertions. Requiring strict oversight of elections is not suppression. It actually promotes one person, one vote and allows voters to regain confidence in the election process.
Twitter was not impressed with Abrams’ outrage:

If you hate it, it must be an excellent bill. Really wish they wouldn’t give failures a stage like they’ve done to you.

Oh no, you’ll never “win” again. Lol

We are sick and tired of your bullshit, race baiting “policies” fortifying our elections! They aren’t suppressing anyone’s votes, they are protecting our votes! You are a menace to our state and need to be stopped, our legislators are protecting our votes!
