Biden declares he plans to run for reelection, critics of wide-ranging, scripted-like presser aren’t so sure

President Biden held his first solo press conference on Thursday and addressed immigration issues and held a discussion on the filibuster where he blamed former President Trump for all of the difficulties he is dealing with. The back and forth mostly felt scripted and he referred to his notes repeatedly.

The question and answer part of the presser focused a great deal on illegal immigration. Some questions were softball and fawned over Biden as a “moral and decent man.” But others were more pointed. Biden stated that there was an increase in immigration every year around this time as a justification for the crisis on the border. He blamed in-country circumstances for the surge. He also faulted former President Trump repeatedly for not funding HHS and not having enough beds.

The President says he is rebuilding Trump’s broken system. That most of the unaccompanied minors are 16-years-old and older and are not babies that are being ripped from their mother’s arms. Fort Bliss has allotted 5,000 beds according to Biden for illegal immigrants.

One reporter asked Biden how he felt about the overcrowded detention facilities housing minors and he said it was unacceptable. He was asked when reporters would get access to all of the facilities and he waffled on that eventually saying he didn’t know when that would happen.

Biden seemed to grow angry when asked by one reporter if he had moved too quickly on rolling back Trump’s immigration policies. He said he had no apologies and furiously railed against Trump.

Biden was also asked about the filibuster rule concerning voting rights and whether he would do away with it or amend it. He said he wanted to go back to the way it was used pre-1971 but would not commit to scuttling it. Some of his answers were confusing and irrelevant. Biden also said the Republicans were abusing the rule and keeping him from getting things done. When asked if he agreed that the filibuster was a relic of Jim Crow as Obama said it was, Biden agreed. One major faux pas was when Biden accidentally stated he had been a senator for 120 years.

The President was also asked whether he was worried about Republicans doing away with voting rights and keeping people from voting in elections. Again, this seemed to upset Biden. He was asked if he was worried about losing the House and seats in 2022. His response was that the actions of Republican lawmakers were sick and that Republican voters supported Biden’s stance on the issue. He said it “makes Jim Crow look like Jim Eagle.”

Biden was also asked if he would run in 2024 for the presidency. He said that is his expectation and that he would like to have Harris on his ticket. Whenever asked about Trump running against him, he sneered and deflected on the issue. At one point he pondered out loud if there would even be a Republican Party when the next election occurs and then he confusingly spoke about uniting the country. That was after he slammed Republicans on taxes and not giving enough stimulus money to Americans.

At times during the press conference, Biden seemed to lose his place and had to refer to his notes. He would break off in mid-sentence and haltingly answer some questions in a disjointed way.

Biden was widely ripped on Twitter where critics assumed this would be his last presser, much less his last election:
