Stitched-up Mitt Romney brushes off black eye, being knocked unconscious with joke about CPAC

Utah Republican Senator Mitt Romney told the media he took a bad fall over the weekend while visiting his grandchildren and it knocked him unconscious, blackened his eye, and required “a lot of stitches.”

Romney was taken to a hospital in Boston after the tumble and is now reportedly doing fine. He was not kept overnight. The senator is sporting a very visible black right eye.

“I took a fall. Knocked me unconscious. But I’m doing better,” Romney told the press on Monday night in Washington, D.C. He was short on details concerning the mishap and did not answer questions concerning exactly what happened.

NBC reporter Frank Thorp asked him about his black eye, “What happened to your eye?”

The Utah senator decided to joke about the incident in reference to the Conservative Political Action Conference. “Let’s see, what can I say? Yeah, I had kind of a tough, tough weekend. I went to CPAC – that was a problem,” Romney joked. “I took a fall.”

The lawmaker was asked how many stitches he received. Strangely, Romney didn’t know.

“A lot of stitches. I don’t know how many. I asked the doctor how many stitches and she said, I don’t know, but it’s all through my eyebrow and my lip,” Romney recounted.

Romney has been a very vocal critic of former President Donald Trump and supported the attempts to impeach him. He was one of seven Republicans to support the second attempt to impeach the former president. He is not popular among conservatives in the Republican Party for his liberal stances and for his attacks on Trump.

The failed presidential contender did not attend the Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando, Florida over the weekend. He was not invited this year. Trump was the headliner at the event and singled the Utah senator out for his stance against him.

Trump called Mitt Romney out at the Conservative Political Action Conference this year: “The Democrats don’t have grandstanders like Mitt Romney, little Ben Sasse, Richard Burr, Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Pat Toomey — and in the House, Tom Rice, South Carolina, Adam Kinzinger, Dan Newhouse, Anthony Gonzalez, that’s another beauty, Fred Upton, Jaime Herrera Beutler, Peter Meijer, John Katko, David Valadao, and of course, the warmonger, a person that loves seeing our troops fighting, Liz Cheney. How about that?” Trump stated to a very receptive crowd.

The former president wasn’t the only Republican to take a shot at Romney during CPAC. Former Utah Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz also hit back at Romney: “My name is Jason Chaffetz, I’m from Utah and I am not Mitt Romney,” Chaffetz quipped. “If you’re looking for Pierre Delecto, you need to go down the hall, go left, and then just keep going left until — well, just keep going left. That’s where you’ll find him.”

Romney was also not invited to CPAC in 2020. CPAC organizer Matt Schlapp said that Romney was not invited to the event, stating he “would be afraid for (Romney’s) physical safety, people are so mad at him.”
