Biden gets defensive when Univision anchor questions ‘kids in cages’ under his administration

Univision anchor Ilia Calderon questioned President Joe Biden in a recent interview on the use of temporary detention facilities for unaccompanied illegal immigrant children.

Biden seemed to take offense when the term “kids in cages” was mentioned as Calderon interviewed the president and first lady on Friday during their visit to Houston, TX. She queried Biden over various facilities, including a purported plan to open a tent city in Del Rio.

“Mr. President, in the five weeks you’ve been in office, you have been taking many actions to reverse the Trump administration’s anti-immigration policy. But today the Washington Post reports that your administration has plans to open tents at Del Rio, a town close to the border. Can you confirm that?” she asked the president.

Biden waffled: “What I can confirm is right now is there’s thousands of unaccompanied children coming across the border. We’ve been able to place a significant number of them in licensed facilities throughout the country, shelters throughout the country.”

The president continued by highlighting his policies: “But what happened is in Texas, they opened up one that was a former one used in the last administration. Our hope and expectation is that won’t stay open very long. And will be able to provide for every kid who comes across the border safely to be housed in a facility that’s licensed, and what we’re trying to do, and have literally hundreds of people doing now, connect them with families in this country. Get them to the families that they came to see or they are looking for. We’ve already connected thousands of them in that way. So that’s our hope is to unite these children with their families while they wait to have a hearing.”

At that point, Jill Biden chimed in: “And this administration is doing it in a humane way. And that’s really important, I mean we want to make sure that these children are safe, get mental health services, they get physical health services, they get education. So we are really concerned about these children.”

Calderon was not letting go and gently continued to box Biden in: “For how long is the administration planning to have the kids in these facilities, not only in tents like you mentioned, but also the other facilities that look like portable containers, or I don’t know how can you call them. But it brings back memories from the kids in cages, and how is it different from that?”

That seemed to offend Biden and he pushed back: “Well, it’s much different from that in terms of, we have people there helping them, we have people that are in those facilities taking care of them, but my hope is they all are able to get out. All are able to get into licensed facilities and/or be united with family members here in the United States.”

Biden has been under fire for his use of trailers that look like shipping containers with bars on the windows to house unaccompanied illegal alien minors and has claimed that the facilities are necessary because of COVID social distancing requirements.
