Ben Rhodes claims radicalized Trump supporters must be detoxed through use of national security

Obama’s former deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes told MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace on Wednesday that Trump supporters are an “issue of Homeland Security” and called for government and Big Tech to regulate information on social media. He tied it to the Capitol riot and proclaimed it will take “years” for a “detox” of “lies” and “hate” from the right and “Libertarians” utilizing the resources of federal intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

“It’s going to take many years to detox the disinformation, the lies, the hate that has been spread,” Rhodes alarmingly stated. “A whole segment of the American population has been radicalized over what’s happened the last four years, and by the fact that Donald Trump is no longer there – they can no longer see Donald Trump representing their grievances in the highest office.”

Rhodes noted that it would be “a lot of work” for national security officials.

“I think from a policy perspective, Nicolle, there are big questions about the future of social media in this country, whether or not someone has to step in and regulate these platforms so that it’s not left to the CEO of Twitter to make a decision to kick President Trump off a couple of week before his term ends,” he said. “Can government work with these tech companies to determine how they can at least slow the spread of this poisonous disinformation?”

Rhodes went on at length how “social media bubbles” encourage hatred of those who have opposing political viewpoints. But he was referring to conservatives hating liberals in a one-sided bashing of Trump supporters. He also praised Utah GOP Sen. Mitt Romney and quoted him as saying, “leadership is telling people the truth.” Where ‘truth’ is evidently subjective.

“Can the Republican Party finally stand up and tell their people the truth?” Rhodes asked basically calling all on the right liars.

“It would be my policy that a Republican must assert the truth before they’re allowed to share any other views,” Wallace replied a few moments later, accusing Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) of not going “far enough in beating down the lie.” She is allegedly calling for the censorship of those who do not agree with Democrats. Either they say what is demanded or they should be silenced.

Rhodes was a major advocate for the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which the Trump administration withdrew from, and he criticized the State Department’s move last month to designate Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism. Now, he has the ear of President Biden.

In Wallace’s interview, she also brought in John Brennan, who lamented there’s been a “growth in polarization” that’s the fault of the right, so Biden officials “are now moving in laser-like fashion to try to uncover as much as they can about what looks very similar to insurgency movements we have seen overseas,” consisting “of religious extremists, authoritarians, fascists, bigots, racists, nativists, and even Libertarians.” He is labeling everyone on the right under these categories and this seems to be a warning that the Biden administration will be coming after them and treating them as they would terrorists.

She also had Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) on who claimed the Biden administration will have a “major challenge” when it comes to deprogramming people who disagree with Democrats. And she included “Republicans that served in the building we watched all day that went along with the lies” regarding Trump’s unsubstantiated claims on the election.
