Airplane antics: Trump supporters confront Mitt Romney – and he has no place to hide

Senator Mitt Romney found no place to hide from vocal airline travelers who confronted him about his support of President Donald Trump.

The Utah Republican was seen in videos posted to social media being challenged about his stand on Trump’s election battle and having passengers inside a plane chanting, “Traitor!” The former 2012 GOP presidential nominee did not endorse the president in the 2020 election that is set to be certified by Congress on Wednesday, and Trump supporters let him feel the heat for his choice.

A video posted on Twitter apparently showed Romney in an airport waiting area prior to boarding a flight from Salt Lake City to Washington, D.C. The woman who seems to have been filming the encounter approached the lawmaker who immediately asked her to put her face mask on.

“Please put your mask on, you’re required by law to put your mask on in this airport,” Romney said.

“Don’t tell me what to do. I’m standing six feet away,” she informed him but said she would put it on anyway because she wanted to “have a chat” with him. “Why aren’t you supporting President Trump? You’re not supporting him.”

“I do support President Trump,” Romney replied. “I’m sorry, I do agree with many of the things he’s for and I support him.”

The woman continued to press the senator about the election results which appear to have given Democrat Joe Biden the victory, asking him why he will not support Trump in the challenge over “fraudulent votes,” apparently referring to Wednesday’s session in Congress.

“It’s a long story but it’s a constitutional process and the constitution is clear,” Romney explained. “I will follow the constitution and I will explain all that when we meet in Congress this week.”

“You were voted in as a conservative to represent the conservative constituents. period,” the woman informed him, as he shook his head in disagreement. “You were voted in to represent us.”

“Actually, that’s not how the constitution works,” Romney shot back, closing his laptop computer and then walking away while he continued to comment to her and another man who was also recording the encounter. The woman called Romney out as “a joke” as he walked away, adding that it was a “disgusting shame” that he was not supporting the president.

Several GOP senators plan to join House Republicans on Wednesday to oppose certification of the presidential election results. Romney has indicated that he will not be joining them.

“The egregious ploy to reject electors may enhance the political ambition of some, but dangerously threatens our Democratic Republic,” the former governor of Massachusetts said in a statement on Sunday. “The congressional power to reject electors is reserved for the most extreme and unusual circumstances. These are far from it.”

Romney called out the challenge by his GOP colleagues as “nonsense” and an “ill-conceived endeavor.”

“This has the predictable potential to lead to disruption, and worse,” he said. “I could never have imagined seeing these things in the greatest democracy in the world. Has ambition so eclipsed principle?”

Another video also posted to social media on Tuesday showed the inside of a plane with passengers chanting, “Traitor! Traitor! Traitor!” (Romney cannot be seen in the video and BPR has not independently confirmed if he was on the flight).

“We want to know your connections to Burisma and Joe Biden!” one woman could be heard saying in the video. “Mitt Romney, your constituents want to know why you’ll certify the Electoral College” votes.

The president’s supporters are not going quietly into the night as many on the left would hope. After four years of harassing Trump and demeaning his supporters, Democrats expect those on the other side of the political divide to just be quiet and sit down, but as an early Wednesday-morning video from Washington, D.C. showed, that is not likely.
