Rep. Ilhan Omar was blasted online by several users after she complained that Minneapolis police officers shot and killed a suspect who first rammed their vehicles and shot at them.
On Thursday, officers were in the process of performing a traffic stop when the exchange of gunfire occurred, according to Fox9.
Bodycam footage released by the Minneapolis Police Department shows an officer exiting his vehicle as other officers attempt to box in a man driving a white sedan, which is attempting to flee.
A slowed-down version of the video shows the driver-side window glass of the white vehicle shattering outward before officers begin firing into the sedan, ultimately killing the driver.
Police said a woman was also in the vehicle but was not injured.
In the video, officers can be heard shouting, “Stop your car,” and “Hands up, hands up!”
“When I viewed the video that everyone is viewing, and certainly the slowed version, it appears the individual inside the vehicle fires his weapon at the officers first,” MPD Chief Medaria Arradondo told reporters.
He added that based on what he’s seen he believes “my officers were reacting to that deadly threat.”
The department said that the man who was shot and killed was a suspect in a felony probe, but investigators did not provide further details. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting, KSTP noted.
Arradondo told reporters that his officers subsequently found a gun in the vehicle. The suspect was later identified by family members as Dolal Idd, 23.
His father, Bayle Gelle, blamed police.
“I feel really sad. This is police brutality,” Gelle said. “When they see a man, they kill him. They don’t even know why.”
So, too, did Omar.
MPD is a joke, this isn’t transparency or accountability.
A man was killed, his family terrorized & robbed of a son and all they are left w/ is more questions than answers.
Let’s stop normalizing + justifying state sanctioned murder by those who take an oath to uphold the law. https://t.co/PPYcYvCa6i

She was ripped online by several users who pointed out that, according to the body cam evidence and other reporting, the suspect shot at officers first.
He opened fire on the cops. Some people it’s not misconduct, an accident, or even a tragic necessity. Some people actually just deserve it

Talking about the same guy who rammed police cars and started shooting at the officers?

No surprise Ilhan Omar is rushing to defend the person who was on video plowing into cop cars, pulling a gun, and shooting at the police before they returned fire killing him. https://t.co/ig6DmDwFnc

How hard is it to condemn someone who shoots at a cop?
This hard👇 https://t.co/oSWZi7zOsK

The incident took place around 6:15 p.m. at a local convenience store and gas station. The officers were part of a Community Response Team, “a unit that often deals with higher risk crimes and situations,” KSTP reported.
A small group of protesters organized by the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations gathered at the scene later Thursday to demand police transparency.
The incident was the first police-involved death since May when Minneapolis exploded in violence after suspect George Floyd died at the hands of four officers, one of whom pinned him to the pavement for several minutes.
Those officers were subsequent have all been charged in Floyd’s death. Derek Chauvin, the officer who pinned Floyd with his knee, was the first to be arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
Floyd’s death sparked violence and rioting around the country, as well as a resurgence in the Black Lives Matter movement while launching a left-wing push to defund police departments.
