Reporter struggles to deliver live Michigan update as Trump supporters shout ‘CNN sucks!’

A live CNN broadcast from Michigan was drowned out by enthusiastic supporters of President Donald Trump shouting their disdain for the network.

Reporter Dianne Gallagher strained to deliver her live update from Lansing on Monday as a group of Trump supporters behind her repeatedly shouted “CNN sucks!” and other phrases. The CNN national correspondent spoke with anchor Brianna Keilar back in the studio who asked her to hold the microphone “a little closer” to her mouth.

“You can tell there are some protesters out here who do not want them to certify that election,” Gallagher said Monday as what appeared to be a group of men, many wearing Make America Great Again hats, shouted “Fake news!” and “Four more years!” behind her live shot.

“So if you can still hear me over the loudspeakers here, basically there are four members of the Board of Canvassers,” she continued, referring to Michigan’s efforts to certify the election results.

“Now this is usually a pretty mundane protocol that they go through to certify what has already been certified by each of the counties. There are four members, two are Republican, two are Democrats,” Gallagher explained.

“One of the Republicans has already indicated that he isn’t sure that he’s going to vote for certification. The other Republican hasn’t said what he’s going to do,” she added, as the shouting behind her grew even louder, with one man seen holding a bullhorn.

“My producer, Dan Shepherd, he went to that Republican’s house and his wife said he is not going to talk about it before the meeting here,” the reporter continued.

“Can you just do us a favor, Dianne, and just hold up your microphone a little closer to your mouth?” Keilar asked. “And then tell us about that member of the canvassing board who we’re sort of waiting to see what they do.”

“Sure thing,” Gallagher replied as she pushed on with her report.

“They’re supposed to start in a few moments here. You only need three of the four members to vote for certification for it to happen, so that’s why all eyes are on him at this point. If it was a 2-2 deadlock, it would immediately go to the Court of Appeals because of the flurry of lawsuits that would undoubtedly be filed,” she explained.

“Now, the likelihood is that the Court of Appeals would make a decision that would tell the board of canvassers they had to certify. But, it is possible to go to the state Supreme Court,” she added amid a fresh sound of “CNN Sucks!” shouts.

“Dianne, thank you so much for weathering that for us,” Keilar said as the cameras quickly cut away from the Lansing shot.

The Michigan State Board of Canvassers ended up voting to certify the state’s election results, giving the state’s 16 electoral votes to Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

Michigan Republican Chair Laura Cox urged the Board to delay the vote until an audit could be conducted during a meeting on Monday.

“I am asking you to consider delaying certification. There are too many questions that need to be answered regarding this election,” Cox said. “Too many numerical anomalies and credible reports of procedural irregularities. We need to remove the distrust and sense of procedural disenfranchisement felt by many Michigan voters in place. This vote will be certified, and the will of the people will be upheld. But we need to ensure there is a fair and accurate vote count first.”

Meanwhile, the live CNN segment interrupted by Trump supporters provided plenty of entertainment on social media.
