Man who gave impassioned, viral pro-2nd Amendment speech set to become N.C.’s first black lieutenant gov

A man who appeared in a video railing against a proposal to ban certain semi-automatic rifles and who became a spokesman for the NRA, is set to become the first black lieutenant governor of North Carolina.

GOP candidate Mark Robinson, went viral in a 2018 video after delivering a passionate defense of the Second Amendment during a Greensboro city council meeting, following a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

Robinson defeated his Democratic rival, Yvonne Lewis Holley, with 52 percent of the vote compared to her 48 percent, Fox News reported. Had she won, she also would have become the state’s first black lieutenant governor.

According to CBS affiliate WFMY, Robinson — a former factory worker who grew up in foster care — said he will focus on ensuring police funding and veteran care.

Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, was reelected, so the state’s second-highest-ranking elected position will be held by a member of the opposition party.

In March, after winning his primary, Robinson told “Fox & Friends” that his “message is so much more than the Second Amendment, which is a crucial issue.

“It’s a message that touches on all the topics conservative North Carolinians are concerned with today,” he added.

Fox News reported that a climate-change organization funded by billionaire Mike Bloomberg, who failed to secure the Democratic presidential nomination earlier this year, despite spending nearly a half-billion dollars. The group poured $2.5 million into the state race in the final weeks, on behalf of Holley.

During an April 2018 Greensboro City Council meeting in which members were set to discuss new gun restrictions following the Parkland shootings, Robinson stepped up to the mic to push back against the measures, with passion and logic.

“I didn’t have time to write a fancy speech. I didn’t have the resource of an English teacher to sit down and write a speech with at school today and be brought over here and practice or anything,” he began.

“What I really came down here for is this. I’ve heard a whole lot of people in here talking tonight about this group and that group and domestic violence and blacks and these minorities and that minority. What I want to know is when are you all going to start standing up for the majority? And here’s who the majority is: I’m the majority,” he continued.

“I’m the majority. I’m a law-abiding citizen who has never shot anybody,” Robinson said. “Never committed a serious crime. Never committed a felony. I’ve never done anything like that. It seems like every time we have one of these shootings, nobody wants to put the blame where it goes, which is at the shooter’s feet. You want to put it at my feet. You want to turn around and restrict my rights.”

“You want to restrict my right to buy a firearm and protect myself from some of the very people you are talking about in here tonight,” he added.

“It’s ridiculous. I don’t think Rod Serling could come up with a better script,” he noted further, a reference to the famed narrator of the 1950s-era TV sci-fi series, “The Twilight Zone.”

“The law-abiding citizens of this community and many communities around this country, we are the first ones taxed and the last ones considered, and the first ones punished when things like this happens,” Robinson railed.

“Well, I’m here to tell you tonight, it is not going to happen without a fight, and when I say fight, I don’t mean shots fired, I don’t mean fists thrown, I mean I’m going to come down here to this city council and raise hell just like these loonies from the Left do until you listen to the majority of the people in this city, and I am the majority,” he added.

After his speech went viral, Robinson began serving on the NRA’s board of directors.
