Leftist groups reportedly received $170m in taxpayer money funneled through ‘dark money’ Tides Center

Roughly $170 million in taxpayer-funded federal grants have been funneled through a left-wing dark money mega-group where scores of progressive organizations including the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation are based, according to tax records.

The grants were disbursed to various organizations through the San Francisco-based Tides Center, a non-profit incubator used by wealthy leftists to fund their causes, the Washington Free Beacon reported.

Several left-wing extremist organizations come under the umbrella of the Tides Center, which serves as a “fiscal sponsor” to other nonprofits by providing them its 501(c)(3) tax and legal status. That way, groups falling under the auspices of the Tides Center do not, themselves, have to register with the IRS.

The grant money was disbursed to leftist groups parked at the Tides Center over the course of years, between 2001 and 2018, and steadily got bigger over time, a review of the center’s tax data shows.

“The Tides Center is as liberal and politically active as they come; its entire purpose is to create new activist groups,” noted Scott Walter, president of the Capital Research Center.

“For example, we recently revealed that the Tides Center sponsors the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, one of the top groups in the Marxist-led BLM movement. It’s fair to question whether tax dollars sourced from all Americans should flow to nonprofits that have such an open ideological axe to grind,” he added, the Free Beacon reported.

Walter notes further that the Tides Center’s recipient profile at USASpending.gov, where the federal government lists grants, shows that it has gotten $34 million in federal funds since 2008. Most grants came from the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Department of Health and Human Services.

“While USASpending is meant to inform the public of where government grants are coming from and where they are going, it contains incomplete data. During the period of time in which the website says the Tides Center received $34 million in federal funding, the group’s own tax forms show that it had received $139 million in government grants,” the Free Beacon reported.

The amount of taxpayer money going to the Tides Center has been steadily increasing for years. In 2001, the umbrella group reported receiving $3.4 million on its tax statements, but the figure had grown to $19.2 in 2018, or about 15 percent of the total amount of $137 million received in grants and contributions that year.

As for the $170 million disbursed by the Tides Center to left-wing groups for their pet projects, it’s nearly impossible to know where the grant money wound up because of the Tides Center’s status as an umbrella fiscal sponsor of those organizations.

The center was founded in 1996 as a branch of the Tides Foundation, which was the left’s first network utilized to engage in dark money spending. Since then, a wealth of additional leftist groups have been launched, each acting as conduits for wealthy Democrat donors to gift money anonymously.

Besides the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, the Tides Center is also a sponsor to the Alliance for Safety and Justice, a social justice group that also received $2 million in grant money from the NFL in 2019, the Free Beacon reported.

The alliance has served as an incubator for several other environmental, gun-control, anti-free trade, and abortion rights organizations.
