Former NFL player Herschel Walker was “upset” about the push by Democrats to look at paying black Americans reparations for slavery.

Walker spoke to Fox News host Martha MacCallum on “The Story” Thursday about the issue following a report that California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a historic new law into effect that will create a task force to examine granting reparations.

“As a nation, we can only truly thrive when every one of us has the opportunity to thrive. Our painful history of slavery has evolved into structural racism and bias built into and permeating throughout our democratic and economic institutions,” Newsom said in a news release Wednesday, claiming that people of color in the state still face “discrimination and disadvantages.”

The nine-member task force established by the new law will come up with recommendations on how the reparations may be paid out and to whom.

Walker slammed the very idea during his Fox News appearance on Thursday.

“I’m upset about it because all they’re doing is pandering for a vote,” he told MacCallum. “Why are you paying African-Americans off instead of empowering African-Americans?”

“They don’t have an answer for what Donald Trump is saying, in trying to empower African-Americans by putting jobs in those areas, by putting better education in those areas, by going out putting small businesses, African-American owned businesses, in those areas,” he added.

“What they are trying to do now is pander for a vote. It is sad that they are going to say I’m going to give you money,” the former Heisman winner said.

“Who are you going to give the money to? What about the people that fought to free you as a slave? What about the white people that fought and freed you as a slave?” Walker asked.

“Let’s get serious here. You don’t give people a job, why don’t you teach them how to work? That’s what I want to say, don’t give them a fish, teach them how to fish. That’s what’s going to make African-Americans better and hope every African-American wake up and realize that’s what they’re doing right now,” he added.

Walker recounted the many Black Lives Matter protesters rioting and looting in Democrat-run cities, claiming the goods they were stealing and the damage they were inflicting was some form of reparations.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and other Democratic leaders have indicated that they support the idea of studying the concept and how it would work while Republicans have not been supportive of a plan that many warn could come with a trillion-dollar price tag.

Democratic party leaders want to “pay you for a vote,” Walker argued.

“What about empowering you to run your own businesses?” he asked. “What about empowering you to become a doctor? To become a lawyer? No one thought about that. Everyone’s thinking about, ‘Let’s pay you off.’ That’s what they used to do years ago … I thought we wanted to change.”

MacCallum noted that there are two ways being presented to help people, no matter what the color of their skin is, pointing out that one is “give them an opportunity and the other is to say, you know, we owe you something, we want to compensate you and you can sort of figure out what you want to do with that money.”

“Do you feel like that is the side that is winning more people over right now, just 30 some days from this election?” she asked the former NFL running back.

“You know, it may win some people over, but one thing I think they are concerned about, I think they know this president right now is starting to get some African-Americans and also Hispanic-Americans to come around and see what’s going on,” he replied.

“What’s going on is that this president has done things for these communities that they didn’t do a long time ago. How can you ask former Vice President Biden to do anything for anyone when he had 47 years to have done this? He could have done this a long time ago,” Walker said.

“Now they want to do it — and I hate to use this term — don’t keep telling me you’re going to do it, you’ve never done it. This president here has done most everything he set out to do and I’m not saying I’m tooting his horn, but he has. And one thing about it is they don’t have anything to fight against it, so now let’s pay you for the vote,” he continued.

Walker also noted that there are “other people out there also that are suffering.”

“You can’t just pay African-Americans,” he said, before concluding that Newsom and Democrats have their priorities mixed up.

“There is a homeless problem in California. There’s fires going on in California, but we are going to worry about this right now? ” he said. “Let’s think about it.”
