Speakers incite hate: Mom stokes BLM anger over son’s death, but her story leaves out why he got shot

Two years after police were cleared in the fatal shooting of a Portland man, his mother used his death to bash cops in a speech stoking Black Lives Matter protests in the city.

The mother of Patrick Kimmons vowed that a “change is going to come” as she spewed anti-police attacks to a crowd gathered in front of the Multnomah County Justice Center in downtown Portland, bashing law enforcement and the officers who fatally shot her son in 2018 as “cowards.”

“We need to continue to keep marching. We need to continue to keep chanting. We need to continue to keep running. We need to continue to keep screaming,” Letha Winston said.

“We need to stand tall through it all. Do not ever let anyone discourage you from getting justice…. A change is going to come,” she added.

Several videos posted from the gathering showed Winston chanting she was going to “fight” against alleged injustice.

“I said, ‘they took my son!’ so I am taking and demanding justice for Patrick Kimmons and all others,” she said. “We’re here to take our streets back.”

She led the crown in a chant of “Black Lives Matter!” as she reportedly spoke for more than an hour Sunday.

Winston was joined by activist Demetria Hester who called for defunding of the police. Journalist Andy Ngo shared videos recorded by @livesmattershow and others at the event which was followed a short time later by another night of violence, marking more than 80 nights of consecutive protests.

“We’re getting ready to get armored up down here,” Winston can be heard saying. “I will continue my mission for justice by any means necessary.”

“No justice, no peace! Take it to the streets. And f— the police!” the crowd chanted as they began marching following Winston’s speech.

Winston has been demanding that Mayor Ted Wheeler reopen her son’s case after the officers who fatally shot Kimmons in 2018 were cleared when a grand jury ruled that their actions were justified. Portland Police said the 27-year-old was armed and refused to listen to commands as they discovered he had shot two people in a fight just moments before being confronted.

Ngo pointed out in a tweet that Winston was “inciting the crowd to violence” with her speech on Sunday.

Others on Twitter also slammed the woman for using her son’s death as a platform to promote “crimes against others.”

As the night unfolded, scenes of demonstrators attacking buildings and pelting police were shared on social media.

In one disturbing and graphic incident, protesters allegedly chased a man driving a pickup truck claiming he had tried to run them over. After the driver crashed the truck, he was violently grabbed out of the vehicle and brutally assaulted by the mob.

One person ran and kicked the man in the head, apparently knocking him unconscious. Police reported that they arrived and encountered “a hostile crowd,” adding that the unidentified man was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

The Portland Police Bureau also noted that they have been so overwhelmed by rioting that more than 60 emergency calls to the 911 dispatch center from residents went unanswered.
