House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sparked heated backlash for seeming to compare the use of federal forces against protesters in Portland with stormtroopers.
The California Democrat slammed President Donald Trump in a tweet on Friday for deploying “unidentified stormtroopers” in the Oregon city to quell rioting and violent protests that have continued for weeks. But Pelosi’s attempt to shame and berate the president boomeranged as she was called out for the “despicable” analogy on social media.
“Unidentified stormtroopers. Unmarked cars. Kidnapping protesters and causing severe injuries in response to graffiti,” Pelosi tweeted. “These are not the actions of a democratic republic. @DHSgov’s actions in Portland undermine its mission.”
“Trump & his stormtroopers must be stopped,” she added.

In the following tweet, she called out the “one-sided violence from federal agents acting as Trump’s secret police,” declaring that it is “disgraceful behavior we would expect from a banana republic.”
First Amendment speech should never be met with one-sided violence from federal agents acting as Trump’s secret police, especially when unidentified. This is disgraceful behavior we would expect from a banana republic — not the government of the United States.

Democrat leaders in Oregon and the city of Portland, including Governor Kate Brown, have vehemently objected to the deployment of federal officials in the wake of protests that have turned increasingly violent and have continued for weeks following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May.
Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf rebuked officials in the Oregon city this week, calling them out for doing nothing to stop the weeks-long destruction of property by protesters. Wolf also released a damning timeline showing the damage and the attacks on law enforcement.
“The city of Portland has been under siege for 47 straight days by a violent mob while local political leaders refuse to restore order to protect their city,” Wolf said in a statement. “Each night, lawless anarchists destroy and desecrate property, including the federal courthouse, and attack the brave law enforcement officers protecting it.”
Statues have been vandalized and toppled, federal buildings have been attacked and this week, protesters began to copy former efforts in Seattle to establish “autonomous zones” as they were seen setting up tents and barricading streets.
Protesters have also reportedly tried to shine laser lights into officers’ eyes and have frequently hurled objects at them, such as glass bottles, paint and other debris. Over the past weekend, a demonstrator allegedly trying to break down the door of a federal government building with a hammer used the instrument to strike a federal officer in the head.
Unidentified federal forces, in unmarked vehicles, have been sent to the city to counter the violence that has wrecked portions of Portland and caused millions of dollars in damages while elected leaders stand by and watch. Portland’s Mayor Ted Wheeler told federal agents this week to “stay inside” or “leave” the city and also slammed the “life-threatening tactics” used by federal officers in messages he posted on Twitter.
Despite the efforts by Democrats to try and paint negative images of the Trump administration in the situation, Pelosi’s shot at the president backfired after her ill-advised reference to Nazi stormtroopers or “Brownshirts.”
San Francisco Republican Party chairman John Dennis called out the 80-year-old Democrat leader for “openly siding with an organized gang of Marxist thugs.”
“She’s protecting them. She’s with THEM,” he tweeted.
.@SpeakerPelosi is openly siding with an organized gang of Marxist thugs.
She’s protecting them.
She’s with THEM.

“The speaker of the House is 3rd in line to the presidency and this is how she refers to American law enforcement officers?” Bob Maness, a retired colonel in the United States Air Force and a survivor of the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon, tweeted.
He called her out as “despicable” and said she owed an apology to all Americans, “especially the thin blue line.”
The speaker of the House is 3rd in line to the presidency and this is how she refers to American law enforcement officers? as Stormtroopers like in Nazi Germany … @SpeakerPelosi you are despicable and owe all Americans an apology, especially the thin blue line. https://t.co/VBh1mTk81o

“You have no clue what is going on here,” journalist Andy Ngo, who has been documenting the violence for weeks, tweeted.
Graffiti? How about explosives, hammers, knives, sledgehammers, slingshots w/ metal ball bearings, blinding lasers, pipe bombs and more? You have no clue what is going on here.

Many others also joined in to condemn Pelosi’s double standard and her “absolutely disgusting rhetoric.”
.@SpeakerPelosi
This is a an incendiary comment and inaccurate. They were identified with US flags, and DHS on shoulders. Antifa started Doxing Federal agents. If marked vehicles they would be vandalized by your friends. Do your job, protect the American people. Disgraceful!— Noble Dave, Still Land of the Free!! 🍊🍊🍊 (@DaveVino) July 18, 2020
Nancy Pelosi just compared American police officers to Nazi stormtroopers. Absolutely disgusting rhetoric. She owes the thin blue line an apology immediately. https://t.co/xOKkKmXUM9

Police not Stormtroopers. Arrests not kidnappings

Funny how you never used such harsh language to describe the terrorists who have been destroying cities, statues of abolitionists, presidents and civil rights leaders but you jumped right away to comparing our law enforcement to Nazis. By funny I mean vile and sickening.
