Gingrich: Three generations of brainwashing in anti-American hatred are paying off for the left

Newt Gingrich blamed “three generations of brainwashing” for the current level of anti-American hatred in the country.

The former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives pulled back the curtain on how “freedom itself is at stake” in America, connecting the “educated ignorance” taught in the nation’s schools for decades and the current manifestation of radical “Leftist Anti-American Theology.”

The “brainwashing” Gingrich maintained in an op-ed published by Fox News Thursday, may go back to a German-born University of California, San Diego professor, Herbert Marcuse, who taught on Marxism in the 1960s. What followed was years of the left’s takeover of academia.

“We have watched the hard left, the America-hating totalitarians who want to define acceptable speech, as they took over the academic world,” Gingrich wrote.

“The college boards – made up of supposedly sound community leaders – refused to fight,” as did local and state governments, he explained. “Vehement anti-American professors” continued to be hired by colleges and universities across the country while alumni “continued to give to schools, which were teaching their own children and grandchildren to despise them.”

“We did not think through the eventual reality that graduates who had been taught systematic falsehoods would take those falsehoods into their jobs,” Gingrich continued, adding that the spread has “now infested our news media, bureaucracies and corporate headquarters.”

“These are sincere fanatics. It is this fanaticism that has been so visible in the last few weeks,” he added. “In case after case, the new fanaticism is imposing a thought police model reinforced by the Maoist tradition of public confession and group solidarity.”

The best-selling author noted that the warning signs were there and even former President Ronald Reagan addressed the rise of anti-Americanism in his farewell address on Jan. 11, 1989. Gingrich included the text of the speech from the Republican president who saw the historic collapse of the communist Soviet Union.

“And are we doing a good enough job teaching our children what America is and what she represents in the long history of the world?” Reagan asked in that address.

“Those of us who are over 35 or so years of age grew up in a different America. We were taught, very directly, what it means to be an American. And we absorbed, almost in the air, a love of country and an appreciation of its institutions,” he said, noting that as the nation entered a new decade, it seemed things were changing.

“We’ve got to do a better job of getting across that America is freedom – freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of enterprise.,” he warned.

“So, we’ve got to teach history based not on what’s in fashion but what’s important – why the Pilgrims came here, who Jimmy Doolittle was, and what those 30 seconds over Tokyo meant,” Reagan said. “If we forget what we did, we won’t know who we are. I’m warning of an eradication of the American memory that could result, ultimately, in an erosion of the American spirit. Let’s start with some basics: more attention to American history and a greater emphasis on civic ritual.”

Gingrich, who served as House Speaker from 1995 to 1999, noted the difficult road ahead in trying to undo the damage wrought by years of “teaching falsehoods and anti-American lies.”

For the nation to survive as a constitutional republic and preserve the freedoms many died to protect, Gingrich urged that “we have no choice but to fight to defeat the anti-Americans and reassert our nation.”
