Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle is “absolutely mortified” over a feud between her close friend Jessica Mulroney and a lifestyle blogger over ‘white privilege’ and now is reportedly questioning whether they can remain BFFs.

The 38-year-old wife of Prince Harry has been telling other friends that the now-viral ‘scandal’ has made her deeply embarrassed, according to the UK’s Daily Mail.

“Meghan is absolutely mortified that she’s been dragged into this complete mess. She said Jessica is in no way a racist, but the way she handled the situation (with the blogger) was tone-deaf and heartbreaking,” a close friend of Markle told the Daily Mail.

Markle’s reported anxiety stems from Mulroney’s response to a video shared on Instagram by lifestyle blogger Sasha Exeter, who is black, called “MY ‘AMY COOPER’ EXPERIENCE,” which was a reference to an incident involving a white woman who called police on a black birdwatcher in New York City’s Central Park last month.

Cooper, who turned out to be a liberal Democrat supporter and donor, was fired from her high-profile job, and a rescue dog in her possession was taken away.

In her roughly 12-minute video, Exeter noted that she shared a “generic” call to action in light of recent events involving the death of Minneapolis resident George Floyd, who died at the hands of police and whose death triggered demonstrations and rioting around the country. She also claimed that Mulroney “took offense” to the message.

Exeter insisted that while she wasn’t calling Mulroney a racist, she claimed, without evidence, that Mulroney “is very well aware of her wealth, her perceived power and privilege because of the color of her skin.”

“And that, my friends, gave her the momentary confidence to come for my livelihood in writing,” said Exeter, which she then said was “textbook white privilege.”

“For her to threaten me  ― a single mom, a single black mom — during a racial pandemic blows my mind,” the blogger noted further. “The goal here is genuine, transformative change ― not optical and performative bulls–t. You cannot be posting that you stand in solidarity while attempting to silence somebody via text.”

The calling out led Mulroney to issue an apology.

“You are right when you say ‘this s–t needs to stop,'” said Mulroney, according to People. “As leaders, we need to join hands and call out wrongs. I know we have different experiences. And that is something that, even in the course of a heated argument, I need to acknowledge and understand. I am unequivocally sorry for not doing that with you, and for any hurt I caused.”

At that point, Mulroney brought up her BFF relationship with Markle, calling it and the Duchess’ fame “deeply educational.”

“I learned a lot from that,” said Mulroney. “I promise to continue to learn and listen on how I can use my privilege to elevate and support black voices.”

Following Mulroney’s apology, Exeter shared a screenshot of a direct message from Mulroney which appeared to threaten a lawsuit.

“Liable [sic] suit. Good luck,” Mulroney wrote.

The apology didn’t matter, ultimately.

Mulroney was cut by ABC from any future appearances on the network’s “Good Morning America” program, where she had been appearing frequently.

“As Jessica Mulroney said last night, she is stepping away from her professional engagements and that includes Good Morning America. She will no longer appear on our show,” a tweet from the morning show’s official account reads.

The rift appears to have caused a split between Mulroney and Markle, as well.

“Meghan said friends reflect friends and because of what’s at stake she can no longer be associated with Jessica, at least not in public. She has to do what she has to do in order to preserve her dignity and her own reputation,” the close friend and source told the Daily Mail.

The source added they “wouldn’t be surprised” if this marked the “beginning of the end of their friendship,” noting further that Markle, once an actress, couldn’t come to the defense of Mulroney publicly to help salvage her now-endangered career.

“It’s not like Meghan can just call up ABC and defend Jessica, said the source, the Daily Mail reported. “There was a reason Meghan waited for so long to make a statement. She wanted to get it right. She said she urged Jessica to do the same thing from the get-go.”
