An English actress known for her part in the “Harry Potter” films fueled criticism of the left after revealing her thoughts on Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s recent bout with COVID-19.
Miriam Margolyes sparked a social media outcry and even shocked the hosts of Britain’s Channel 4 on Friday when she admitted in an interview that she just “wanted him to die,” speaking of the UK prime minister who was hospitalized in his battle with the coronavirus last month.

In an appearance on the British late-night television talk show, “The Last Leg,” Margolyes was asked about what she thought of the British government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic when she made the controversial comments.
“Appallingly, of course, appallingly,” she said. “It’s a disgrace, it’s a scandal. It’s a public scandal.”
“I had difficulty not wanting Boris Johnson to die. I wanted him to die,” the actress, who plays Professor Sprout in the “Harry Potter” films, said.
“Then I thought that will reflect badly on me and I don’t want to be the sort of person that wants people to die,” she clarified, after shocking the show’s hosts.
“So then I wanted him to get better, which he did do, he did get better,” the 78-year-old Labour party activist added. “But he didn’t get better as a human being. And I really would prefer that.”
“So we’re in the s**t, basically, here,” she concluded.
Johnson had been quarantined in his Downing St. residence since he was diagnosed with COVID-19 before being hospitalized in early April. Johnson is expected to deliver an address to the nation on Sunday to present a “roadmap” of steps to reopening the UK economy.

While Margolyes shocked many with her comments, the actress is well-known for speaking her mind. Speaking on the UK’s “News Breakfast” show about Brexit, she quipped that former British Prime Minister David Cameron should be “boiled in oil.”
She was right

The actress did find some support for her comments on Johnson from critics of the prime minister.

Me considering the fact people are getting their knickers in a twist about Miriam Margolyes but not getting equally upset at holding the government accountable for avoidable deaths, including those of NHS workers #MiriamMargolyes pic.twitter.com/N0ZaPl54dP

If you’re someone who is more outraged at #MiriamMargolyes calling herself out on a fleeting thought about #BorisJohnson, than the fact that by his incompetence there are over 30,000 dead (including those who survived WW2), you need to have a word with your sense of perspective.

But many others were appalled by Margolyes and her insensitive remarks, including journalist Piers Morgan who found her comments “disgusting.”
Disgusting. This is where toxic tribalism has got us.. actively wanting people of a different political persuasion to die. Shame on you Ms Margoyles. https://t.co/WBVP5bt4Vp

I wouldn’t wish any human being dead, just saying. #MiriamMargolyes

Miriam Margolyes appears to be struggling with this lockdown. But that does not excuse what she said on live TV last night. Truly appalling #thelastleg

What a disgraceful thing to say!
— Armchair Critic (@Spikusminimus) May 9, 2020
It’s disgusting, even if you don’t agree with somebody you don’t wish that on people. Even more saddening is the number of people that support her views, what is going on with society?

I like Miriam Margolyes and, having heard her tell affectionate anecdotes about old-skool luvvies she must have known didn’t share her politics, am a bit surprised by how vituperative she is. But: free speech. The point is, if she were a Conservative, her career would now be over
