While it’s been said that necessity is the mother of invention, the coronavirus quarantines are proving that boredom often sparks creativity.

People stuck in their homes with plenty of extra time on their hands thanks to the global pandemic are finding ways to defuse their restlessness and provide much-needed laughter on social media.

With new phrases like “social distancing” and “self-quarantining” becoming part of everyone’s vocabularies, the reality of the cultural lifestyle shifts has made for a wave of inventive responses like the latest: social distancing-themed pickup lines.

Over 250,000 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed worldwide and over 10,000 deaths have been attributed to the illness, forcing the closure of businesses and schools to stem the spread of the virus. People are working from home, practicing keeping a six-foot distance from others and more in an effort to deal with the outbreak which prompted California’s Gov. Gavin Newsom to issue a mandatory stay at home order on Thursday.

Powerful messages of inspiration encouraged Americans on Twitter and even Hollywood actors took to social media to spread a message of hope and solidarity, while many found a new way to literally shine a light in the darkness.

Many social media users turned to humor to deal with the stress and the isolation from being trapped at home, and they sparked the viral hashtag #SocialDistancingPickUpLines to help with finding the perfect quarantine mate.

Some contributions focused on the medical side of COVID-19:

Others suggested the 2020 version of  “Netflix and chill.”

The six-foot distance rule and the quarantines inspired many tweets.

And, of course, the empty store shelves and toilet paper hoarding were also included as the hashtag and the entertaining tweets were appreciated by many who needed some levity in their isolation.
