Covington Catholic bus in fatal crash returning from March for Life rally

A charter bus carrying Covington Catholic High School students and chaperones was struck by a wrong-way driver on a Kentucky highway Saturday morning. The driver of the car was killed in the head-on collision.

The bus was carrying the Covington Catholic contingent home from the March for Life rally in Washington, D.C. when the collision occurred in Campbell County at about 7 am.

“This morning, a bus carrying students and chaperones home from the March for Life in Washington, DC was involved in an accident,” said Covington Diocese spokeswoman Laura Keene. “EMT personnel and the Campbell County police have been at the scene and are handling the matter. Please join us in praying for everyone involved in this accident.”

The bus driver was injured and was transported to the hospital. Others on the bus suffered bumps and bruises and one student had a bloody nose, according to Fox News.

A priest who was traveling with the group administered last rites to the person in the automobile who was killed.

Weather may have been a factor in the accident. Another driver, Ricky Lynn, was in the northbound lanes of the AA Highway and narrowly escaped being struck by the wrong-way driver. “It’s pretty bad this morning,” said Lynn. “The weather’s bad. It’s one of those things we try not to get ourselves into.”

Covington Catholic High School students made news one year ago when they were attending the same annual anti-abortion rally and there was a video that became widely distributed showing an encounter between the students and a group of radical protesters called the Black Hebrew Israelites.

Various national news outlets misrepresented the students, some of whom were wearing MAGA hats, as being aggressive and threatening toward a native American, Nathan Philips, who approached the group and stood face to face with a smiling 16-year-old student, Nick Sandmann. In fact, it was subsequently determined that the students did nothing wrong.

In the controversy that followed, some students received death threats and the school closed for a short time in the name of safety concerns. Eventually, some media entities issued corrections to their smear-job reporting but failed to actually apologize to the students or the school.

Lawsuits have been filed as a result and earlier this month, CNN settled a suit filed on Sandmann’s behalf for reputational and punitive damages that probably made him a wealthy young man.

Unfortunately, Covington Catholic High School remains firmly in the minds of liberals as being worthy of their disdain. In a report on the bus crash posted Saturday on its site, the Daily Beast said of last year’s media fiasco: “A video of one student, Nick Sandmann, smirking in a MAGA hat as he faced off against Philips became emblematic of what many said was an act of racist taunting by the students,” then followed it with, “Others saw the criticism as an overreaction and said media coverage of the event blew it out of proportion.”

Directly above that portion of the Daily Beast article, was a colorful graphic link showing Sandmann and President Trump in MAGA hats and a headline that read: “Trump is the Covington-Kid-in-Chief.”

A grab of the Daily Beast report on the Covington High School bus crash.

Obviously it will be a long time, if ever, before Covington Catholic and some of their students will escape malicious aspersions and abuse at the hands of the left.
