Dem senator gloats that Pelosi’s tactic is ‘driving Trump and Republicans crazy,’ but Brit Hume bursts his bubble

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., seems to believe that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi holding the articles of impeachment, potentially prompting a constitutional crisis, is a good idea.

Taking to Twitter, the Democratic senator said Pelosi “can send them over whenever she wants,” and noted that “it’s driving [President] Trump and the Republicans crazy.

Unfortunately for Whitehouse, Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume is on the case.

It’s clear that Democrats are trying to gain the upper hand in dealing with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

And while he has disappointed conservatives in the past, McConnell has proven that he can by wily when motivated and is no pushover when challenging the opposition party.

Responding to the tweet from Whitehouse, Hume asked a simple question about the tactic that is allegedly driving the GOP crazy: “If that’s true, why is Schumer fuming and McConnell laughing?”

In a floor speech late last week declaring an impasse with Democrats in establishing the rules for an impeachment trial, McConnell pretty much dismissed any notion of Pelosi’s actions having any impact.

“In a highly unusual step, the Speaker of the House continues to hem and haw about whether and when she intends to take the normal next step and transmit the House’s accusations to the Senate,” McConnell said.

“Some House Democrats imply they are withholding the articles for some kind of ‘leverage’ so they can dictate the Senate process to Senators,” he added. “I admit, I’m not sure what ‘leverage’ there is in refraining from sending us something we do not want!”

Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wants to call witnesses, but McConnell is pushing back, asking why he should have to clean up House Democrats’ “shoddy work.”

Hume also responded to a tweet from Byron York on whether or not Trump has actually been impeached.

“If House Democrats continue to play this game, I can’t see what would prevent McConnell and the Senate Republicans from dismissing the articles of impeachment for lack of prosecution,” Hume tweeted.

Here’s a quick sampling of responses from Twitter which suggests social media users are feeling confident about Democrats coming up with the short end of the stick here:
