A California K-9 is being praised for jumping through a shattered car window to take down an assault suspect.

The Belgian Malinois named Duke was captured on video as he jumped into the driver’s seat after a California Highway Patrol officer broke through the window to get at the suspect who allegedly led police on a chase early Friday morning.

“CHP pursued a felony suspect, wanted for assault with a deadly weapon, into Corona ending near El Cerrito Road, and the 15 FWY, where the suspect refused to exit his vehicle to surrender,” the Corona Police Department said.

“Officer Neff and his partner K9 Duke responded to assist and gave several opportunities for the suspect to give up as well, which he refused. K9 Duke apprehended the suspect, and Fontana Police took custody of him.”

Julio Ugalde Vasquez, the 31-year-old suspect, refused to cooperate and, after Duke’s persuasive encounter, he was arrested and taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to Fox 11 Los Angeles.

Police reported that Duke, who served in Iraq, and the officers were not injured during the incident.

The officer recounted what happened in the encounter with Vasquez and chuckled over comparisons of Duke to LeBron James. He confirmed that the K-9 was not injured and there was “not a scratch” on him after the amazing leap through the shattered window.

Neff explained that he has had Duke, who was born and raised in Holland, for over two years. Duke, who served in the Marine Corps in Iraq, will turn seven on Dec. 24. Neff plans to celebrate by giving the canine hero a hug and a new toy.

Duke was showered with praise on Twitter where many expressed their amazement over the video.
