Who are these people who call themselves Democratic Socialists?

One of the sorriest developments in modern America is the youthful exuberance to embrace socialism. There is no greater example of the harm that can come from inexperience, ignorance of history, and lack of wisdom. Sure, we can witness the spirit of rebellion in the young, we see it in wild hairdos and metal hanging from flesh. But it’s a blatant disservice for them to praise a way of living so miserable that it has never worked as a successful system of government for any citizenry, and has ruined so many countries.

But wait. It’s not just the young who are flocking fast to admire socialism.

Growing numbers of Democrats are gathering under that banner also, saying that capitalism fosters inequality and social injustice, killing the worker’s paradise. What’s amusing is that these Dems don’t want to be called socialists. They insist on being known as Democratic Socialists. They do this because the word “socialist” is political poison for most Americans; these Dems want to hide behind a new moniker of the far left. They don’t want the socialist label to apply to them.

Let’s explore what that’s all about. Then you decide if their proposals meet the socialist worldview.

A Democratic Socialist is someone who will take from the wealthy and give to everyone else, re-distributing the wealth produced by capitalism. They label capitalists as “authoritarians and oligarchs.”  They want governments to tax whatever assets you own at death, up to as much as 77% in America. These socialists will impose an additional annual “wealth tax” on households worth more than a certain amount, to pay for free college tuition and Medicare for All. They want labor unions and employees to control private corporations instead of corporate officers and shareholders, and they want a guaranteed job for all. They will send payroll taxes and the corporate tax rate skyrocketing, decimating U.S. jobs and rendering businesses unable to expand. Wide swaths of batty Dems endorse The Green New Deal, requiring that America be carbon neutral within 10 years, thus displacing tens of millions of workers in certain industries.

Democratic Socialists lie and say that the middle class will escape more taxation, when in fact everyone will be hit with vastly higher taxes and fees. They get their way through street protests, occupations of universities, trampling public speech that differs from their own, anti-war marches, masked street thugs, classroom propaganda, and inciting the majority to attack an unpopular wealthy minority.

What is described above is absolute government power and government confiscation, a looting of some people’s assets and income, simply because they have saved or earned more than some other people.

These proposals as a platform mark a decidedly abrupt leftward shift of Democratic voters, especially among the young. The Democratic Party has been captured, in some cases highjacked, by outside-the-norm special interest groups, led by shallow people who are good at getting elected by appealing to emotion. How could the solid, old-guard Democrats have let their Party commit suicide? How could they have replaced critical and strategic thinking with the drivel and emotional sound-bites of Beto O’Rourke and Alex Ocasio-Cortez?

It’s one small step from Democratic Socialism to pure socialism. The irony of Democratic Socialism is that there has never existed a socialist country that has been democratic.
