Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell previously said he’d have no choice but to hold a trial for President Trump should the House vote to impeach, but he is promising now that such a trial would end in failure.
“Nancy Pelosi’s in the clutches of a left wing mob. They finally convinced her to impeach the president,” McConnell says in a new Facebook video ad. “All of you know your Constitution. The way that impeachment stops is a Senate majority with me as majority leader.”

The video ends with McConnell asking for donations.
Captions partnered with the ad on Facebook have promised that McConnell is the only thing standing between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Trump’s impeachment.
“Your conservative Senate Majority is the ONLY thing stopping Nancy Pelosi from impeaching President Trump. Donate & help us keep it!” one caption announces.
Another ad caption takes aim at Adam Schiff, a congressman Trump says should resign after he presented false dialogue from the now infamous call between Trump and the Ukrainian president.
“BREAKING: Adam Schiff LIED. His office secretly coordinated with the source of this laughable impeachment inquiry. Help me stop it,” the caption reads.
McConnell previously told CNBC that if the House votes to impeach Trump then he would have no choice but to let a trial move forward in the Senate. As the majority leader, he would be responsible for setting up ground rules and putting the trial into motion.
“I would have no choice but to take it up,” McConnell said about the House voting to impeach. “How long you’re on it is a whole different matter, but I would have no choice but to take it up based on a Senate rule on impeachment.”
With Republicans holding the majority in the Senate, the House voting to impeach Trump is the definition of a losing battle. There is no path to victory, which is why it’s so much easier to identify this whole stunt as a charade to help Democrats take on the president in 2020.
McConnell campaign manager Kevin Golden told The Courier Journal that the current impeachment inquiry is getting McConnell’s supporters more fired up to support his position in the Senate.
“Few issues energize conservative voters like liberal overreach,” he said. “And the Democrats latest outrageous attempt to impeach President Trump has activated our base to new heights.”
Things have gotten pretty off the rails when it comes to the current impeachment inquiry over the nothing phone call between two world leaders. Despite the actual transcript of Trump’s phone call being available and proving no wrongdoing, Democrats are still pushing forward.
Some are even giddy to be abusing the law. Rashida Tlaib recently fantasized about jailing officials who did not comply with House subpoenas in Detroit.
Republicans like Susan Collins and Mitt Romney have also joined ranks with Democrats in saying Trump was wrong to ask Ukraine — and now China — to investigate Joe Biden and his son Hunter — despite there being plenty of allegations of corruption there to investigate.
