Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, could serve as the poster child for the old proverb that it’s better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.

Speaking in a clip shared on Twitter by Blaze Media’s Jason Howerton, the Democrat notorious for mistreating her staff was equally abusive with the truth, saying that an AR-15 was heavier than “10 boxes” and fires “.50 caliber” bullets.

“I held an AR-15 in my hand, I wish I hadn’t. It is as heavy as 10 boxes that you might be moving,” Jackson-Lee declared. “And the bullet that is utilized, a .50 caliber, these kinds of bullets need to be licensed and do not need to be on the street.”

An AR-15 weighs somewhere between 7-9 pounds. and uses .223 caliber bullets, as Howerton pointed out in a follow-up tweet.

More importantly, he highlighted the fact that Lee represents the people looking to regulate firearms in America.

“They know nothing,” Howerton tweeted. “To say the ignorance is astounding and terrifying is an understatement. Is it ignorance? Or is it malevolence? I have a hard time believing someone who WRITES LAWS could be this misinformed. Unreal.”

As for the difference between a .50 caliber and a .223 caliber bullet… well, they’re practically the same size:

Jackson-Lee made the asinine comment while speaking with reporters, saying that Democrats in the House need to start “flooding” the Senate with gun-control bills to stir Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., into action.

“I don’t know what else it takes,” she said. “But I don’t believe we can stop at the door of the United States House.”

The lawmaker co-sponsored three bills “designed to stem the tide of gun violence.”

The National Rifle Association wasted little time reacting to remarks from the ill-informed Democrat.

“It is unfortunate that someone as ill-informed as [Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee] will be holding a hearing on Wednesday to determine how she can further restrict our rights,” read a tweet from the NRA.

There was a mad scramble on social media to locate this mythical AR-15 that fires a .50 caliber round by those eager to purchase it.

Here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter:
