Rep. Omar slams Trump’s threats to Iran, ‘bringing us to brink of war’

Rep. Ilhan Omar mocked President Trump over how he has handled Iran and suggested his misinformed comments and threats are “bringing us to the brink of war.”

The Minnesota Democrat bashed the president for his threats to Iran and his comments in the wake of attacks on Saudi Arabia’s oil production over the weekend,  telling CNN’s Erin Burnett that his administration “cannot be trusted” because of ” lies about weather maps or crowd sizes.”

Omar was asked for her reaction to Trump’s Sunday tweet in response to drone attacks on Saudi Arabia’s oil processing facility, the world’s largest, and a major oil field, which affected more than 5 percent of the daily crude oil production of the world.

The president tweeted that the United States is “locked and loaded” and ready to respond to the attack while announcing a move to release oil from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

Yemen’s rebel Houthi group claimed responsibility for drone attacks amid a backdrop of escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran which, though not directly blamed for the attack by the Trump administration, is believed to be backing the group.

Iran denied having any involvement, but on Monday the president said that it was “looking like” Iran was, in fact, responsible for the attack.

“Do you have any idea what he means by that?” Burnett asked Omar about Trump’s “locked and loaded” tweet during her appearance on CNN’s “OutFront.”

“I don’t, a lot of people don’t, and I don’t even think Iran really fully cares about that and I don’t think a lot of the world cares about that,” Omar replied with a snide chuckle. “I think what this president and this administration does is that they say a lot of things and they really don’t understand the consequences it has on the world stage.”

She went on to give what she thought was her expertise on the U.S. relationship with Iran, essentially blaming Trump for his tough stance with the rogue nation and for destroying all that former President Obama did – which was basically to allow the regime in Tehran to continue to sponsor worldwide terrorism while oppressing its own people.

“When you think about what has happened in regards to the relationship with Iran,” the Muslim congresswoman said. “We’ve worked really hard to improve relations, to make sure that we were bringing them to the table and one of the first things this administration did was to take us out of the Iran Nuclear Deal. And none of this would have happened if we didn’t put further sanctions that devastated the middle class in Iran and now has put our two countries in the brink of war.”

In response to Burnett’s question about whether a military strike against Iran should be “on the table,” the Democrat, who recently defended her offensive “some people did something” phrase, was quick to point out Trump’s power limitations.

“Congress has the constitutional right to declare war. The president doesn’t have it. The Secretary of State doesn’t it have and Saudi Arabia certainly doesn’t have it,” she said.

She then made a reference that became known as “Sharpie-gate” as the president was mocked for saying Hurricane Dorian threatened Alabama.

“I think we need to make sure that the American people understand that this administration that lies about weather maps or crowd sizes cannot be trusted to give us the full information we need to be able to make a decision whether we should be going to war or not with Iran,” Omar said.

“We are not in a position to think about another endless war and I really hope that my colleagues in Congress are going to pressure this administration to take a step back and figure out how we use diplomacy in the escalating situation,” she added.
