At a working breakfast on Sunday morning at the G7 summit in France, President Donald Trump told the press that he expects the U.S. and Britain will negotiate a “very big trade deal” following the U.K. exit from the European Union.
The G7 is providing the first opportunity for Trump and Boris Johnson to meet face to face since Johnson became prime minister in July.
Responding to a reporter’s question about what he would advise Johnson regarding the ongoing Brexit negotiations, the President replied, “He needs no advice. He’s the right man for the job.”
For his part, Johnson offered praise for Trump’s handling of the U.S. economy, but also noted his hope that the trade war with China would not escalate further.
“Just to register a faint, sheeplike note of our view on the trade war, we’re in favor of trade peace on the whole,” he said.
“We’re getting along well right now with China,” Trump told reporters earlier on Sunday. That comment stood in contrast to developments on Friday that included the president announcing an increase in U.S. tariffs on $300 billion in Chinese goods, saying that U.S. businesses are “ordered” to leave China, and another round of retaliatory tariffs against about $75 billion worth of U.S. goods by China.

The White House released a joint statement by Trump and Johnson following their meeting indicating the countries are “committed to increasing U.S.-U.K. cooperation.”
Today, President Donald J. Trump and Prime Minister Boris Johnson met in the margins of the G7 summit in Biarritz, France.
They celebrated the enduring special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom, and reaffirmed the value of transatlantic partnership.
The President and the Prime Minister noted the unique depth of the security and defense partnership between the two countries, and the benefits it brings to each. They committed to increasing the co-operation between the two sovereign nations.
President Trump and Prime Minister Johnson also discussed how the United Kingdom leaving the European Union presents many opportunities for deepening our already robust economic and commercial relationship, including a comprehensive trade agreement.
The leaders acknowledged the importance of free, fair and reciprocal trade, and discussed opportunities for deepening our trading relationship in the future based on mutual respect for these principles.
The President and Prime Minister also discussed the important role of investment in our respective economies and noted American investment in the United Kingdom is responsible for more than one million British jobs and British investment in the United States is responsible for more than one million American jobs.
Before the breakfast, President Trump blasted the “Fake and Disgusting News” for “trying to force a Recession, they are trying to ‘will’ America into……bad Economic times, the worse the better, anything to make my Election more difficult to win.”
