Legislation has been introduced in the Senate that would require all flags purchased by the federal government to be flags actually manufactured within the United States — many are currently mostly made in China.

Sponsored by Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), the bill requires flags purchased by the federal government to not only be manufactured within the United States, but to also only be made with material made within the United States.

“The American flag serves as a symbol of our identity, resolve, and values as one people. To honor its significance, the federal government should only use flags entirely manufactured in the United States,” Collins said in a public statement about the legislation. “This bipartisan legislation will ensure that the symbol of our nation is preserved while supporting American jobs and manufacturers.”

Despite the bill, existing law already states that American flags purchased by the federal government must to be at least fifty percent American made.

Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-IL) has introduced companion legislation in the House, where this sort of bill has stalled before. Collins’ “All-American Flag Act” previously passed through the Senate in 2011 and 2014, but stalled each time when handed over to Congress.

No matter one’s opinion on this specific legislation from the lawmakers, it is a sad reminder that leftists have worked hard to turn the American flag from a unifying symbol representing freedom to just another piece of political divisiveness.

While this legislation would normally be the biggest news about the American flag right now, we live in strange times where Colin Kaepernick and others have labeled America’s earliest flag racist and too many people spent the Fourth of July burning American flags.

Collins is also not the most popular politician on either side of the aisle at the moment. She’s been blasted many times over the years as a RINO (Republican in name only) by the right and the left despises her for a handful of moves, like her confirmation vote for now-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Asked about blowback from her Kavanaugh vote, Collins assured The New York Times in an interview published on Saturday that she does not regret her decision.

“I do not regret my vote in the least,” she said.

Collins is convinced she is one of the few center voices left in politics and that the culture needs more of those center voices.

“I’m an important voice for the nation in an increasingly polarized environment,” she said. “There are so few members left in the center.”

Despite her controversies on both sides of the political aisle, some have taken to social media to show support for Collins’ American flag legislation.

“A patriotic idea. Same should apply for lapel pins and election, 4th of July items,” one Twitter user wrote in response to news of the bill.

Another replied, “The fact that this is even a story and requires legislation is sad.”

“I always thought it was weird to see an American flag stamped ‘Made In China,'” another responded.
