Appalling ‘food tampering’ stunt may land one attention-seeking ‘prankster’ in the slammer for 20 years

A Texas woman’s disgusting ice cream-licking prank could land her in jail for 20 years.

A viral video of the “malicious act of food tampering” prompted an investigation, according to Blue Bell ice cream company, which identified a Walmart in Lufkin, Texas as the location of the stunt, KETK-TV reported.

The video posted to Twitter Saturday showed a woman opening a gallon of Blue Bell ice cream in the store, licking it and then returning it to the freezer.

“Lick it, lick it. Oh, you foul. Put it back, put it back,” a voice can be overheard saying in the video.

“Our staff recognized the location in the video, and we inspected the freezer case,” a statement by Blue Bell on Monday read.

“We found a Tin Roof half gallon that appears to have been compromised. Based on security footage, the location and the inspection of the carton, we believe we may have recovered the half gallon that was tampered with,” the statement continued. “Out of an abundance of caution, we have also removed all Tin Roof half gallons from that location.”

The Lufkin Police Department was notified and may have already identified the woman who was also seen in Walmart surveillance video on the same day the ice cream video was posted on social media.

Once her identity is confirmed, authorities intend to arrest the woman on a charge of second-degree felony tampering with a consumer product, a crime which carries a punishment of 2-20 years. She could face additional federal charges as well, as investigators are discussing the case with the FDA.

“We’re appalled that someone would do this,” Lufkin Director of Public Safety Gerald Williamson said in a statement. “We take it incredibly seriously and we’re acting on it as the major crime that it is.”

“This incident is being investigated as a second-degree felony, it’s a very serious offense,” he told KETK-TV. “If you think about all the implications and how it would affect consumer confidence in the products that you buy, you’ll understand why the legislature has classified it so highly.”

Blue Bell was taking the incident very seriously, stating that the Texas-based company would “not tolerate” food tampering.

“The safety of our ice cream is our highest priority, and we work hard to maintain the highest level of confidence of our customers,” Blue Bell said in its statement. “Food tampering is not a joke, and we will not tolerate tampering with our products. We are grateful to the customers who alerted us and provided us with information.”

As disturbing as the Blue Bell video is, it seems there are others caught on camera as well, making one wonder if it is the beginning of a sick, new trend.
