Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH), one of the many Democrats hoping to challenge Donald Trump for the presidency in 2020, says President Trump visiting North Korea is exactly like when British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain flew to meet Adolf Hitler at the dictator’s private mountain retreat in 1938.
“They talk about historic moments. This is historic, him [Trump] going to North Korea is like Chamberlain going to talk to Hitler,” Ryan said on CNN’s “Reliable Sources” on Sunday.

The congressman continued, “I mean, this guy [Kim Jong-un] was lobbing missiles into the Sea of Japan just a few weeks ago and the president is going to talk to him? I mean, are you kidding me?”
Ryan is only the latest 2020 Democrat hopeful to trash Trump for becoming the first sitting United States president to visit North Korea.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) said the president “shouldn’t be squandering American influence on photo ops and exchanging love letters with ruthless dictators.”
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said the meeting between Trump and Kim Jong-un “weakened the State Department.”
Trump visited North Korea on Sunday and ended up having a meeting with Kim Jong-un that lasted for nearly an hour. The negotiation took place on the South Korean side of the Demilitarized Zone.
Chamberlain traveled to Germany to meet with Hitler in the lead-up to World War II in an attempt to get the dictator to stop seizing territory. The appeasement approach ultimately only delayed World War II for a short time and is often cited as a bad example of leadership.

Ryan also appeared on Fox News to blast Trump for his meeting in North Korea. He called the visit part of “the President Trump appeasement tour.”
“I think this has been the President Trump appeasement tour,” the congressman said on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”
He continued, “I have no idea why he is shaking hands with a dictator who just in May was sending missiles into the Sea of Japan. You don’t reward that kind of behavior with a visit to your country from the president of the United States.”
Ryan also criticized Trump on Sunday for a plan to reportedly loosen sanctions against the Chinese company Huawei Technologies.
“I thought that was the one piece that we could count on President Trump to hold the line on for national security reasons,” Ryan said.
While on CNN, Ryan was also forced to defend his appearing on Fox News.
“I’ll tell you I think what happened this weekend with North Korea, with China, I think it was Donald Trump’s appeasement tour and so, I think we need to make sure that we hit him on some of these issues, the economic issues, the fact that 75 percent of the American people are still living paycheck to paycheck,” he said.
Ryan continued, “Why in God’s name wouldn’t we want to go on Fox and make that economic argument to the working class people who watch Fox?”
