WH trade adviser: Trump tariffs did more in 2 days than Congress did in 20 yrs

Pointing to President Donald Trump’s threat of tariffs against Mexico, White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said Sunday the move allowed him to get more done in two days than Congress has done in 20 years when it comes to immigration and the crisis on the southern border.

Appearing on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” Navarro responded to a poll that showed 52 percent of Americans opposed tariffs on Mexico by pointing to polls that say a vast majority agree that there’s a crisis on the border and suggested even more object to the massive flow of humanity coming up from Central America.

“Polls show that about 80 percent of Americans believe there’s a crisis at the border,” Navarro told host Charles Payne. “If you ask Americans in a poll, what do you think about 100,000 illegal aliens moving every day on a conveyor belt from Guatemala up to San Diego and El Paso, I’d say about 90 percent of them would object to that.”

Navarro’s estimate is clearly tongue-in-cheek, but he’s not too far off — U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported agents apprehended 132,887 individuals who entered the country illegally in May alone.

Not that the U.S. media is making much effort to inform the American people of how critical the problem really is.

The CBP said there have been 676,315 enforcement actions on the border in FY2019 through May, an increase of 99% over the same time last year, and while it remains to be seen how serious Mexico is about stopping the flood of people, Navarro attributed the recent agreement with the country to Trump’s willingness to use tariffs.

“And the tariffs that President Trump used, he got in two days more than Congress did in 20 years on this,” he said. “We have got troops down at the southern border that Mexico has deployed. We’ve got Mexico committing to take the phony asylum seekers onto Mexican soil, which will deter further immigration from the Northern Triangle down at the southern border with Mexico.”

Navarro repeated the use of the term “conveyor belt,” while speaking of who benefits from illegal immigration.

“And we have a very strong commitment to break up that conveyor belt, which is this Rube Goldberg machine of narco-traffickers and human traffickers making billions of dollars off these poor immigrants coming up, and off the American people who have to take their drugs, and the illegal immigrants, which hurt us in terms of jobs,” he said.

Payne was in agreement that the tariffs worked “swiftly with Mexico,” but pointed out that it hasn’t worked so fast with China.

Pointing to polls again, Navarro claimed “a strong majority of Americans support the China tariffs,” and that “8 out of 10 Republicans” do — as he spoke, a graphic of a Fox News poll was displayed showing a plurality believe tariffs on foreign countries hurts the U.S. economy.

The poll did not specify China, and Navarro said that “there’s a growing awareness of China’s economic aggression.”

He also noted that Fentanyl is killing tens of thousands of Americans.

“That’s made right in China,” Navarro said, adding that the Chinese said they would stop the flow and it hasn’t happened.
