Mexican officials actually did something to stem the tsunami of illegal immigrants in response to President Trump’s threats to slap Mexico with punishing tariffs that would decimate its economy.
Yesterday, about 200 military police, immigration agents, and federal police blocked 1,000 Central American migrants from walking through Mexico en route to the United States, the AP reported.
“The officials blocked the highway near the community of Metapa, about 11 miles from Tapachula. Unarmed agents wrestled some migrants who resisted to the ground, but the vast majority complied and boarded buses or immigration agency vans.”
This is happening just as Mexican officials are in Washington, D.C. this week to beg the United States to not impose the tariffs.
The fact that Mexican authorities stopped the migrant caravan yesterday proves that they were not doing enough to stem the barrage of illegals stampeding toward the U.S.
Mexico terrified that punitive tariffs would crush its economy
Mexico finally stepped up just days after President Trump threatened to impose a 5% tariff on goods from Mexico starting on June 10 if Mexico doesn’t block the wave of illegals flooding the U.S. border from Central America.
Trump further threatened to gradually increase the tariffs by 5% each month up to 25% by October until “illegal migrants coming through Mexico” stop.
Mexican president reneged on promise to stem migrant caravans
Months ago, Mexican president Lopez Obrador — who took office in December 2018 — had pledged to detain the migrant caravans instead of giving them passage through Mexico.
Specifically, López Obrador promised to give all Central American migrants a work visa to stay in Mexico. However, Obrador apparently reneged on his promise, even though Mexico gets hundreds of millions of dollars in U.S. aid.
Mexico’s Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard is in Washington this week to try to stop the Trump administration from imposing the tariffs and escalating a trade war that Mexico cannot win.
Dems and some RINOs are complaining about tariff threats
Naturally, Democrats slammed President Trump’s threatened use of punitive tariffs against Mexico. Some RINOs are also screeching about it.
However, Trump is undeterred by their whines. This morning (June 6), the president blasted members of Congress for not supporting him in his bid to protect U.S. sovereignty and safeguard its border.
“They [Mexico] have to step up to the plate, and perhaps they will,” Trump said. “Something pretty dramatic could happen with Mexico. I think a lot of progress was made yesterday, but we have to make a lot of progress. They can solve the problem.”
The president also dismissed the shrieks from some members of Congress, saying they’re clueless.
“A lot of people, [Republican] senators included, have no idea what they’re talking about when it comes to tariffs.
The Democrats in Congress have been a disaster. They want free immigration. They want [illegals] to pour into our country. They don’t care who it is. We go to them, we want to fix the immigration laws, and they just want it to do badly.”
Trump: The gravy train ends right here, right now
Trump says the obstructionist Democrats are trying to undermine U.S. immigration policies because they’re pandering to the far-left in a bid to buy their votes for the 2020 election.
“The worse it does, the happier they are. So that’s the way it is until after the election. It is just disgrace. They want to just ride it out. They want to have a real bad time.”
President Trump previously said Americans are getting sick and tired of being the world’s “piggy bank” that bends over backwards to help other countries while they take advantage of our generosity.
Most of them show their gratitude by b*tching nonstop about the United States and doing nothing to help us in return for our financial and military aid.
“The United States is the piggy bank [of the world],” Trump said. “It has all the money that others want to take from us, but we’re not taking it so easy anymore. It’s a lot different [now with me as president].”
