Wallace allows Buttigieg to trash Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham in townhall stacked with gushing Dems

Sunday night, Fox News continued its outreach to the political left by presenting another Democrat candidate in a televised town hall … this time–Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Indiana. The Claremont, New Hampshire, audience was filled with supporters of the young candidate and they particularly liked it when Buttigieg blasted Fox News and the network’s prime time opinion hosts.

A question for the producer-types … wouldn’t these so-called town halls be for more interesting if they were actually attended by a cross-section of voters from across the political spectrum? Instead, we get people who react as if they are a game show audience reacting to and even reading from cue cards, waiting for their complementary goody bag of trinkets to be passed out after the lights go down.

Through the hour-long program, moderator Chris Wallace directed “Mayor Pete,” as he jovially called him, to talk about his youth, leadership experience, “inclusive” policy plans, abortion, drug addiction, and debt.

Toward the end of the love-fest, Buttigieg went after Fox News personalities Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham … among the network’s opinion hosts who were “not always there in good faith,” he said. He called out Carlson, for saying immigrants made the United States “dirtier” and Laura Ingraham, for once saying she would compare detention centers for migrant children to summer camps. “There is a reason why anybody has to swallow hard and think twice before participating in this media ecosystem,” Buttigieg said.

Wallace made no comment and provided no defense against the candidate’s criticisms of Fox News.

Midway through the program, Wallace played a film clip showing President Trump a year earlier speaking to an audience in New Hampshire and pledging to provide help for the burgeoning opioid crisis, an issue that has hit the state particularly hard. The clip included other Democrat candidates recently saying that too little has been done, along with comments from a local first responder who replied in such a way as to confirm that. All in all, a not-so-subtle dig at the President by the host who has often shown his disdain for the President.

Wallace asked a small handful of tough questions throughout the evening, in between setting up softballs.

Inevitably, the President weighed in with tweets that said: “Hard to believe that @FoxNews is wasting airtime on Mayor Pete, as Chris Wallace likes to call him. Fox is moving more and more to the losing (wrong) side in covering the Dems. They got dumped from the Democrats boring debates, and they just want in. They forgot the people who got them there. Chris Wallace said, ‘I actually think, whether you like his opinions or not, that Mayor Pete has a lot of substance…fascinating biography.’ Gee, he never speaks well of me – I like Mike Wallace better…and Alfred E. Newman will never be President!”

Buttigieg’s town hall on Fox is the third such broadcast of Democrat candidates, following Senators Bernie Sanders and Amy Klobuchar. At least one more is on the schedule, featuring Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

“Our attitude has been, ‘Let’s do some town halls but be selective about it,'” Bill Sammon, Fox’s senior vice president of news, recently told the Washington Post. “There are two dozen candidates. We’re not going to get to all of them. That’s just reality. So let’s carefully select the promising candidates and space them out a bit. We’re not going to put them on every night or five in one night. We’ll do it every couple or three weeks and have an impact.”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren declined to participate in the series of town halls. She tweeted: “Fox News balances a mix of bigotry, racism, and outright lies with enough legit journalism to make the claim to advertisers that it’s a reputable news outlet. It’s all about dragging in ad money — big ad money.”
