‘Russia hoax’ continues: Senate Intelligence Committee subpoenas Don Jr. to testify yet again

A new report suggests Donald Trump Jr. has been subpoenaed by the Senate Intelligence Committee to testify on Russian collusion in the 2016 presidential election.

Though Robert Mueller’s two-plus year investigation into President Donald Trump found zero evidence of collusion, Democrats have been unwilling to accept the results. Attorney General William Barr already testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee where he made it clear that he did not believe Trump was guilty of collusion or obstruction of justice based on the investigation’s findings.

A Wednesday report from Axios now claims that Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son, is being called upon to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee for a second time.

“The Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee has subpoenaed Donald Trump Jr. to answer questions about his previous testimony before Senate investigators in relation to the Russia investigation, sources with direct knowledge told Axios,” the report reads.

This Trump Jr. news could mean there are big political fights coming in the future. Not only does the subpoena come after Mueller’s investigation has concluded, but it also comes in the wake of Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) recently announcing “case closed” on Russia collusion on the Senate floor.

The Senate Intelligence Committee is also chaired by Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) and is part of a Republican-controlled Senate, two facts that could lead to some serious infighting within the Republican Party.

The Senate Intelligence Committee has refused to confirm the subpoena.

“We do not discuss the details of witness engagements with the Committee,” a Senate Intelligence Committee spokesperson told Axios in a statement. “Throughout the investigation, the Committee has reserved the right to recall witnesses for additional testimony as needed, as every witness and witness counsel has been made aware.”

In Trump Jr.’s previous testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, he answered questions for more than nine hours.

A source close to Trump Jr. told Breitbart News that Sen. Burr is “taking his marching orders from liberal Democrats intent on trying to take down the President and his family.”

“It’s outrageous that Senator Burr appears to be taking his marching orders from liberal Democrats intent on trying to take down the President and his family to harass a private citizen who has already spent 9 hours testifying in front of the Senate Intel Committee,” the source said.

They continued, “When Don agreed to testify to the Senate Intel Committee in 2017, there was an agreement between Don and the Committee that it would be a ‘one and done testimony’ and in return Don agreed to answer any questions for as long a time as they’d like. Don fulfilled his end of the agreement, clearly Senator Burr is not fulfilling his side of it. It’s bad enough that he has to deal with constant harassment from Democrats in the House, but it’s shocking to see Senate Republicans join them in this harassment campaign.”

The source added that Senate Republicans should proceed with caution. “Unfortunately for them, Don Jr. has a long memory and come the 2020 campaign season when Senate Republicans are begging him to raise money and campaign for them, he will remember where every Senate Republican stood on this,” they said.

The theory from some Trump critics is that Donald Trump Jr. acted as a middle man between Russia and his father during the presidential election. One particular fact these critics like to latch onto is that Trump Jr. met with Russians at Trump Tower during the campaign.

Though part of the reason for the meeting was the promise of damaging information on Hillary Clinton, Trump Jr. said the meeting led nowhere and his father was never made aware of it.

Again, Trump Jr. testified about this specific meeting for nine hours in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee. What possible questions could they have at this point that they weren’t able to ask in the previous nine hours?

It seems at this point there is a large portion of the Senate and Congress that will simply never accept the results of the Mueller report or any testimony that contradicts their conspiracy theories.
