Lots of people in this country are afraid that some really scary characters are worming their way into Congress, or declaring a run for the U.S. presidency. Their fears are not misplaced.
We have devolved into a country where most smart people are not willing to run for public office, abandoning the field of play to the shallow and the incompetent who have little idea how to govern properly. Down on the bottom rung of the ladder of reality and statesmanship, in the dark cellar, are the new socialists.
There are few dangers more serious to America’s founding principles than the rising terror of socialism. The most insidious way to destroy the America we know is to fall for the crap that socialists like Bernie Sanders and AOC What’s-Her-Name are trying to lay on us. Liz Warren also has fallen into the anti-capitalist camp, in which her “Accountable Capitalism Act “would lay waste and expropriate private property rights in America; she would “force owners of successful companies to cede ‘at least 40% of their ownership rights to employees….’ ”. Ask anyone in this crowd for the details of how to pay for their visions of socialism, and they break into incoherent mumbles, or absurd, silly responses. They never have a good answer to why any thinking individuals would want to give a clunky government so much power over their own life.
The socialist concept is not limited to a small number of political wackos; it was reported in BizPac Review in August, 2018 that a Gallup poll revealed “57% of Democrats view socialism favorably, while just 46% of Democrats have a positive view of capitalism.” Such people do not seem to understand that socialism is like spoiled meat— no matter what you make of it, it will make you sick.
Socialism today is simply redistribution of wealth, with a ballooning government making the decisions as to who gets the goodies. The Rolexes, prime steaks, Chanel handbags and armored SUVs, of course, will go to the socialist political bosses, which is always what happens, and which is precisely what happened in Venezuela starting in 2009. And, socialists apparently have not grasped that if they succeed in killing capitalism, there will be very little money left to fund their grandiose entitlement programs. When capitalism is not healthily operating, profits and jobs evaporate which also results in the evaporation of tax revenue.
The true colors of a socialist leader are now being shown by Maduro of Venezuela. He does not give a damn about the plight of his people; we see this today as he prohibits humanitarian aid–food and medicine—for his people, as he blocks then sets fire to the trucks that are trying to deliver aid. This is nothing new for Maduro, who is killing protesters and who stole his last election. He has turned Venezuela, which used to be perhaps the most prosperous and wealthy country in South America, into a nation ruled by thieves. Over 90% of Venezuelans do not earn enough to cover basic needs. Maduro has destroyed the currency, as the IMF states the inflation rate will reach 10 million percent this year. Thousands have died of starvation and over 10% of the desperate population has fled their country.
And what do America’s socialist politicians think of Maduro’s castroismo activity? The Wall Street Journal reports that Maduro “is finding rare support among America’s Democratic socialists”. “Mr. Sanders is most worried about U.S. support for ‘regime change.’ ” The socialist luminary known as AOC states this is an “internal, polarized conflict” in Venezuela and “the U.S. should not anoint the leader of the opposition…” How wonderful. Venezuelans are dying from lack of essential medical help, starvation and sniper fire, yet socialists in America want to be in “solidarity” with their socialist comrades in Venezuela. Birds of a feather.
Readers of this column had better hope polls showing that the majority of millennials believe that socialism is preferable, or the same as capitalism, will wise up quickly and get educated to the truth. Our next generation is flirting with a danger that could kill the American republic.
