Newly elected Muslim congresswoman Ihlan Omar has accused Texas Congressman Dan Crenshaw, an injured war veteran and former Navy SEAL, of virtue signaling as per the declaration he signed last week vowing to forego his pay until the ongoing government shutdown concludes.
“Stop with the virtue signaling Congressaman, the American people need this to end now, not Feb 1st,” she tweeted to the congressman Monday, four days after he posted his declaration to Twitter.
Look:
1) We aren’t paid until Feb 1st, so no pay to withhold now.
2) Vote to reopen the government like we did & give hardworking Fed employees their paychecks. That’s caring!

It’s unclear whether she was trying to score political points or whether she’s simply unaware of the actual meaning of virtue-signaling, which denotes a behavior anathema to what Crenshaw actually did.
Virtue-signaling specifically refers to behavior seen among leftist hypocrites wherein they endorse certain behaviors or viewpoints as a way to promote themselves as morally ‘virtuous’ but most often turn around and act in ways opposite to those positions.
Following the start of the shutdown last month, socialist congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez lectured her peers, arguing that their salaries should be furloughed til the crisis ends. Yet as of mid-January, she’s given no indication that she’s abiding by her own recommendation.
Next time we have a gov shutdown, Congressional salaries should be furloughed as well.
It’s completely unacceptable that members of Congress can force a government shutdown on partisan lines & then have Congressional salaries exempt from that decision.
Have some integrity. https://t.co/BgueNNjf0f

I tried asking @AOC if she planned to take a salary (during the shutdown). “I’ve gotta run!” she said, walking away. In fairness she had to get in line for her photo with @SpeakerPelosi

That is an example of virtue-signaling. Had Crenshaw also called for salaries to be furloughed but then turned around and continued to collect his own salary, he too would have been virtue-signaling. But he didn’t do that. Instead, he announced last Thursday that he wouldn’t be accepting his pay.
“I cannot in good conscience get paid while federal employees’ financial futures hang in the balance because of this partial government shutdown. I’ve asked the Chief Administrative Officer to withhold my pay until we have come to an agreement to adequately fund border security,” he tweeted.
He reiterated this again in a tweet Monday.

If Houston’s hardworking federal workers aren’t getting paid, then I shouldn’t be paid either. My pay will be withheld until the government reopens.
Democrats have still not put forth any border security proposals. They can end this right now, and secure our border. Win-win. pic.twitter.com/ve5hGi1txa

Omar’s factually inaccurate tweet was written in response to the congressman’s second tweet.
The Muslim congressman is herself an expert at virtue-signaling. When elected to Congress last November, she became one of the first Muslim women in Congress. In response to this achievement, she claimed her victory was a rejection of “religious bigotry.”
Listen:
“In a time where there is a lot of religious bigotry, it’s almost perfect to have this counterbalance,” she said to Roll Call at the time, referencing fellow newly elected Muslim congresswoman Rashida Tlaib. “To be elected to Congress is a real rejection of that message.”
Yet only weeks later she posted a tweet that mocked Vice President Mike Pence for his Christian faith. And her partner in virtue-signaling, Tlaib, reportedly liked the tweet as well.
Speaking of Tlaib, while she too enjoys virtue-signaling about religious bigotry, her own statements and associations show her to be a rabid and unrepentant antisemite.
It’s this sort of hypocritical behavior that makes one a virtue-signaler, as noted by social media.

“Stop with the virtue signaling.” Have you read your tweets???????

Says the queen if virtue signaling. All you voted for was to spend tax payer dollars on everyone except the tax-payer. Keep it closed till you all realize where your loyalties should lie. Hint: it’s the legal US Citizen.

Showing your constituents that you have requested you not get paid until the shutdown is over is not virtue signaling. You sending a tweet out acting like that is virtue signaling to try and prove you have the same moral character as him is, by definition, virtue signaling.

Imagine you telling anyone to stop virtue signaling. ???

Omar Accuses Crenshaw of ‘Virtue Signaling’ for Refusing Salary During Shutdown. @IlhanMN it isn’t “virtue signaling”, @DanCrenshawTX has #VIRTUE (behavior showing high moral standard), big difference, please note. https://t.co/EeNkYBMZEE

You’re entire career is based on virtue signaling. Calling out @RepDanCrenshaw for doing the right thing is nothing more than projection.

As of Tuesday, Omar had not yet responded to the criticism.
