Meghan McCain fired back at insensitive critics after she posted a Christmas tribute to her late father, Sen. John McCain.
The co-host of ABC’s “The View” tweeted out a special message on Christmas Eve to her late father, who died in August at the age of 81.
I love you. Merry Christmas Dad, @SenJohnMcCain – wherever you are. pic.twitter.com/o684B4zPmd

“I love you. Merry Christmas Dad,” she tweeted Monday night.
Immediately, another Twitter user trolled her post with the message: “Do this in private.”

Many came to her defense, blasting the critic for the remark.
He’s a Christmas angel, my love! ❤️??

How messed are up you that you think you can tell her how to use her twitter? What a jackass, seriously.

But McCain rose to her own defense with a follow-up tweet, responding to the troll publicly.
If there’s one thing I’m doing in 2019 it’s to continue to destigmatize talking about grief, death and cancer. My father shared his life in public, I share it in death. To all of you out there missing a loved one tonight – you are not alone. I’m along side you, sending strength. https://t.co/u8pddZPcDo

McCain has honored her father several times since his death and after she spoke at his funeral. She tweeted in October that missing him that “physically hurts my heart,” and again in November, she paid tribute to him in a Veterans Day message.
Today on #VeteransDay we remember and honor those who have selflessly served and sacrificed. Those who have and continue to fight to protect our freedoms -I am forever grateful. I miss you so much Dad, thank you for showing me what fighting for something greater than yourself is. pic.twitter.com/WeWXNJqvj4

McCain found plenty of support following her Christmas Eve tweet, as many shared memories of loved ones they had lost and were also missing especially during holiday season.
I love what you said. Strength and peace to you ??? I just lost my dad last December. I feel I’m supposed to just be quiet and heal. There is no closure to loss like this.

Merry Christmas Meghan – this is also my first Christmas without my father. It hurts, but I know that our fathers are with us in spirit. Peace to you.

No one should ever have to talk about their grief or death of a loved one in private. No matter how long it is. Never stop @MeghanMcCain

Do this in private? What an insensitive statement. Meghan, as well as everyone else, can grieve however is best for them.

Thank you @MeghanMcCain . I lost my mother this year and I appreciate the honesty about your grief.

Lost my grandfather and best friend to cancer and am mourning them both this holiday season. Prayers are with you, Mrs. McCain – don’t let anyone delegitimize your pain.

Please continue to grieve however needed. Don’t listen to the negativity of those who lack empathy and have probably never experienced great love & loss.I’m missing my mother always, especially at Christmas because it was her favorite holiday. Prayers for strength for you.❤️
