Lest you think there’s not a different standard at play for Democrats than there is for Republicans, behold Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind.
Donnelly was participating in a debate Tuesday night when he made what proved to be a cringe-worthy attempt to praise minorities on his staff in the name of diversity.
“Our state director is Indian American, but he does an amazing job,” the incumbent said. “Our director of all constituent services, she’s African American, but she does an even more incredible job than you could ever imagine.”
The “odd phrasing,” as it was described online, would have been enough to bury any unfortunate Republican who might have uttered them, but it’s smooth sailing for the Democrat.
We saw an even more pronounced example of this when Hillary Clinton joked over the weekend that all black people look alike and there was little push back on the left.
The remarks caught the attention of Fox News anchor Bret Baer, who asked a very pertinent question.
“Hmmm. ‘…but she does a great job’. Will that get attention in this environment?” he asked.

Here’s a sampling of the responses from Twitter that shows the awkwardness here is not lost on social media users — nor is the double standard:

“Sleepin’ Joe” Donnelly woke up long enough to stick his foot in his mouth.

Some odd phrasing from @SenDonnelly attempting to highlight the diversity of his staff:
"Our state director is Indian American, but he does an amazing job."#INSEN

Good thing he's a Democrat or this would show he's a racist. https://t.co/MDEskxzJHR

Can we just be honest and say that if Mike Braun had said this it would be an issue but it won’t because Donnelly is a Dem?

Rhetorical question? If Hillary’s comments barely made a blip in the news then Donnelly will be ok.

He’s trying to be inclusive BUT he’s actually just a subtle racist lol

As much as I’d love to see a massive blunder for an incumbent Democrat, a week before the election, this isn’t that. Seems pretty clear he just isn’t comfortable with public speaking. Do have to mention that if he were a Republican, this would get treated far differently.
