An Oklahoma Democrat is trying a new tactic to win the race in a bid for an Oklahoma House seat.
Running for Oklahoma House District 2, Democrat candidate Tom Stites is taking a step to the right it seems in challenging his Republican opponent Jim Olsen.
Calling himself a conservative Democrat, Stites called into question whether Olsen “is a real gun guy” by challenging him to a shooting competition, according to Tulsa World.
Accusing Olsen of political posturing by appearing to be pro-gun, Stites is out to show voters who he thinks is really the “best choice to represent them on the Second Amendment.”
“I think he is just using the Second Amendment for politics,” Stites said of Olsen.
“My opponent was born and raised in New York and moved here eight years ago,” Stites said. “We need to know if he really knows guns.”
Stites declared that he is “sick and tired of being told as a conservative Democrat I can’t be pro-life or pro-Second Amendment.”
The Democrat said he is a member of the NRA and has a concealed carry permit as well as being a trained and accomplished competitive marksman.
“I believe it’s important for the voters of this county to know which of us is the real deal and which of us truly understands the awesome power of firearms, how to safely handle them, how to teach about them, and how to be a leader on this sacred constitutional right,” Stites said in a video.
He offered his farm for the potential shootout and said the event could be organized by off-duty law enforcement officers, gun dealers, and local NRA members. He also suggested the event could raise money for charities with Stites pledging to donate his winnings to Oklahomans for Life, a pro-life group.
Olsen told the Tulsa World he has no reason to participate in a shooting competition.
“We are not running to be the sniper of Sequoyah County, but we are running for state representative,” the Republican said.
“I may not hit a bull’s-eye every time with a gun, but when it comes to defending our Second Amendment rights, I am always dead center and that is why the Oklahoma Second Amendment Association has endorsed me,” he added.
Looks like a win-win for Oklahoma voters and Second Amendment supporters and, as one Twitter user put it, “This is the kind of Democrat we need!”
