New York Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez bemoaned on Monday the closing of a restaurant where she was previously employed, however, the restaurant cited an Ocasio-Cortez-endorsed policy for its closure.

Ocasio-Cortez visited The Coffee Shop in New York’s Union Square to say goodbye to her old stomping ground before the iconic eatery shuts its doors for good.

“The restaurant I used to work at is closing its doors. I swung by today to say hi one last time, and kid around with friends like old times,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted.

“I’m a normal, working person who chose to run for office, because I believe we can have a better future,” she continued. “You can do it too. We all can.”

The restaurant announced in July that it was closing, and cited the increased minimum wage as one of the attributing factors.

“The times have changed in our industry. The rents are very high and now the minimum wage is going up and we have a huge number of employees” one of The Coffee Shop’s co-founders, Charles Milite, told The New York Post.

Ocasio-Cortez has campaigned on more than doubling the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, in addition to full healthcare and child and sick leave for all, a policy that can stifle economic growth and lead to massive layoffs.

“Ocasio-Cortez’s desired ‘living wage’ of $15 an hour has been a living hell for many small business owners in New York, who’ve been unable to offset the cost through higher prices,” Employment Policies Institute Managing Director Michael Saltsman told The Washington Free Beacon. “It’s fine to mourn the impending closure of your former employer — it’s better to understand the misguided minimum-wage mandates that contributed to that closure.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign did not immediately return a request for comment.
