Actress Amber Heard set herself up for some backlash after a tweet about an ICE checkpoint backfired for being deemed racist.
Heard warned her Twitter followers about an ICE checkpoint near her home in a tweet Tuesday which left many wondering what the 32-year-old actress was even thinking.
“Just heard there’s an ICE checkpoint in hollywood, a few blocks from where I live. Everyone better give their housekeepers, nannies and landscapers a ride home tonight…” read the since-deleted tweet.

The reaction was almost instant as the “Aquaman” actress was lit up for what many saw as racist and insensitive.

She followed up with another tweet within a few minutes, trying to clarify her political point.
Checkpoints on your home streets…. Is this the “great” America we’re aiming for? Raids, fences and police-state like checkpoints don’t feel like the ‘land of the free’ our immigrant ancestors built.

While some appreciated her stand against ICE and President Trump’s immigration policies, others were not so forgiving, calling out the former wife of Hollywood star Johnny Depp for liberal “elitism.”
How does it feel that EVERYONE knows that you reduced immigrants to scrubbing your toilets and mowing your grass. The “tolerant” celebrities are the worst offenders of racism after all. Funny.

I think the “great” America we are aiming for, is one where people don’t assume landscapers, nannies, and housekeepers are illegal immigrants.

Housekeepers, nannies and gardeners. Sounds like elitism to me. #FirstWorld

Yeah, you wouldn’t want to lose the cheap labor now would you? Rich white woman and her underpaid brown workers. Deleting the tweet doesn’t change what you said. pic.twitter.com/G65FItsjmr

Amber Heard the racist

Ironically, Heard has been an outspoken critic of ICE for some time, recently attending a #KeepFamiliesTogether rally in Marcelino Serna Port of Entry in Texas.

Laws are meant to protect and defend our rights 2 liberty & justice, not destroy them. Thnx to all who continue to speak up and fight 4 the principles that did make this country great pic.twitter.com/GWHY9bcP5M

Heard tweeted again following the outrage over her initial post, saying it was “hard to make a simple statement w/out it being used to distract from the real issues.”
With this human rights crisis being so politicized, it is hard to make a simple statement w/out it being used to distract from the real issues. Its hard for everyone to not be negatively affected by this subject n some way. pic.twitter.com/nZ0PrMet4G

Some did come to Heard’s defense, saying she should have chosen her words more carefully.
I can see where you were going but somewhere along the way you took a wrong turn. Delete this sis

Girl, I THINK you meant well, but this…this ain’t it
— JennieThePooh (@elizakelly19822) July 3, 2018
Agreed. Not racist, just stupid.
Also disturbing in its implication.
This means the rich knowingly hire illegal immigrants for menial labor
Rather than doing the right thing and using these jobs to help bring in and establish legal immigrants.
— Matt (@AngryFoodie2015) July 3, 2018
I honestly believe she’s just so ignorant, that she believes any Spanish working minority is an illegal immigrant. People can bash tump all they want, this is racism in its purest form right here.
— mavs dad (@Ceeja_be) July 3, 2018
She absentmindedly tweeted from inside her insulated bubble, thinking just her fellow travelers would be reading it.
